There are plenty of places in Boston serving stellar ice cream – many of them are listed on this site! – but should you find yourself across the Charles River in Central Square, Toscanini’s is a must-hit.
A Best of Boston winner for multiple years, Toscanini’s makes all of their stunning array of ice creams in-house, with flavours ranging from seasonal fruity numbers, like Strawberry Mascarpone, to wilder creations like Marshmallow Fluff. And they’re happy to let you sample away – provided the line isn’t too long.
Open late, this is the spot to be in the summertime, and it’s not uncommon to find yourself with a 15 minute wait in a line out the door for this wonderful creamy treat in peak evening hours. But anybody in it will tell you it’s worth it, as it’s not just the flavours that are borderline-overwhelming (in a good way).
Case in point, my pick is a micro sundae – a scoop of ice cream with chocolate sauce, nuts, sprinkles, and whipped cream – with B3 ice cream: brown sugar, brown butter, and brownie bits (pictured). It strikes just the right balance of rich without being over the top saccharine.
Toscanini’s is the perfect fusion of a neighbourhood coffee shop and an ice cream parlour as techy as the area it resides in: cozy, welcoming, and totally awesome.
