The first detail I discovered about the neighborhood I was going to live in when I moved to Brussels in 2003 was that a step away I could find the best frites in the whole of Brussels.
Maison Antoine is widely known as one of the best places for French fries made from fresh potatoes, and although I can’t be the best judge on this typical Belgian food, I admit they are very good, just perfect when you add any of those dozen of sauces available.
What makes Belgian frites so special is the double deep frying. The first cooks them, the second makes them crispy and golden brown. Do try them with one of the typical Belgian sauces: andalouse or cocktail. Never with ketchup, please!
What I also find very attractive is the deal they made with the pubs around the square. If you see a “happy cone” on display in the windows of the pubs, you can be sure that they are happy to serve you a beer while you eat your “cone” of frites: very convenient!
Work has started to make the square semi-pedestrian and to improve the infrastructure. Maison Antoine is going through a complete changeover so till November the fries will be prepared in a separate truck on the square. But don’t worry, the quality will not change, you might just have to queue longer :)
