Nocturnes 2017 – A night at the museum

Where to go when winter is coming? When days are getting shorter. Streets and terraces emptier. Evenings colder. Rainier. A museum of course.

In 2014, I volunteered for the Brussels Museum Council (BMC). This organization coordinates and promotes nearly 100 museums in Brussels and in the Brussels region. Each year, for 17 years now, the BMC organizes the Nocturnes during the fall season: every Thursday, 5 to 7 museums stay open exceptionally late for you to have a special evening visit…

This year, from September 14 till December 7, a total of 68 museums will open their doors from 17:00 to 22:00. Go and visit one of the classics (such as the MIM musical instruments museum or Autoworld), one of the newer ones (such as the visual arts museum MIMA, the Wiels Museum for contemporary art or Trainworld) or one of the lesser known yet magnificent pearls (such as the Coudenberg Palace, the Erasmus House, the Ixelles Museum or the intestines of Brussels: the Sewers Museum).

A lot of museums organize many special activities for the occasion. And more importantly: the entrance fee will be free sometimes, or at least kept very low (€ 3 or € 1.50 under 25)! Personally, I absolutely adore the Nocturnes. It’s the ideal way to get to know the tremendous variety of big, small and sometimes odd museums in Brussels. Dozens of volunteers give their best to welcome you or show you around in their favorite museum.
