You can’t say you have seen the real Budapest underground unless you’ve been to Bakelit studio in Ferencváros!
All right, the place is not in the city centre (it’s a 20 min bus ride from Boraross tér with bus 23, get off at Szabadkai út), but believe me you won’t regret it! I mean you have to be looking for original places: Bakelit is settled in an old factory.
Actually Bakelit’s interior design is very well done so you’re likely to find it attractive even if you’re not that keen on the alternative stuff!
Now let’s explain what I actually mean by “underground” as the word can cover many definitions and even contradictory concepts. I mean a place where artists are really free to express their feelings the way they want, all that in an unexpected setting.
So don’t be put off by the broken windows and containers piled up at the entrance: keep following the directions along several warehouses and you’ll find a warm building… once you climb the ladder!
Bakelit is a theatre mostly, it has exhibition space too (often displaying foreign artists’ work as a result of a strong residency program) and a bar, which is open when performances and events are going on. Check the website to be sure to go on a day there is something on.
