Indian restaurants are not abound in Budapest. However, there are some nice venues for those craving a spicy tikka or dahl. You just have to find them. My favorite one, Punjab, is not really easy to come across. I discovered this small restaurant behind Vígszínház theatre only a couple of years ago but since then I’m a regular guest there. Especially since I moved to the neighborhood and I always pass the spot which smells of Indian spices from far away.

Punjab is not a posh and trendy restaurant at all. The plastic entrance which separates the kitchen downstairs and the tables upstairs is probably the worst restaurant design which I have ever seen. But that doesn’t matter because the food is amazing. As experts in Indian gastronomy always emphasize, there’s no such a thing as “Indian cuisine”, because each region has its own tastes. Punjab offers food mostly from the northwestern region of India such as different meats baked in the traditional Tandoor oven. Besides, the dishes range from veggie sammosas, paneers, dahls and biryanis to different chicken, lamb, beef or fish plates. Tikka, masala, curry or korma, you’ll find all of them here. Always fresh and tasty.

Just one more thing: the waiter always ask you how you like your food: hot, medium or mild. I always go for the medium, but that’s already hot enough for me.

Huge windows, remarkable ceiling height, and an interesting mix of industrial interior and old coffee-house furniture . When 400 opened last spring, this spacious bar felt to be a bit sterile at first sight but now it has become cozy and welcoming. In the meantime, its neighborhood has grown to be the new centre of Budapest’ night life, with the highest density of bars per square meter. For some reason, 400 has become the centre of the centre, at least for me.

As the owners are originally from Serbia, 400 offers some traditional Balkan dishes such as pljeskavica and cevapi. A hearty sandwich called “Balkan burger” is a must if you’re really hungry but there are different tapas as well if you feel like nibbling on some snacks with your wine.

Even if there’s no real dance floor here, lot of Friday nights end up with dancing in front of the DJ. However, my favorite thing is just sitting at the monumental wooden counter which occupies the middle of the bar and spotting the people around.

And why 400? It has nothing to do with Sparta. The answer is much more simple: 400 is as big as 400 square meters. Impressive!

Entering this tiny veggie buffet in Pozsonyi street makes you feel that everything you eat here is fresh, tasty and healthy. And the chefs of Nemsüti guarantee that it’s really the case. Here you can fuel up on yummy vegetarian or vegan dishes, soups, sandwiches, cakes and fresh juices. The food is always seasonal, fresh, does not contain flour, sugar and artificial stuff. The materials are of the best quality.

This family-run buffet is a true success story, quite similar to the triumph of the Sunset Cookies in Woody Allen’s film Small Time Crooks, translated Süti, nemsüti (‘Cookies, Not Cookies’) in Hungarian. Except the owners of Nemsüti had never intended to rob a bank. That’s the origin of the name, which might be a bit complicated by I could not help sharing it. In addition, Nemsüti didn’t sell cookies in the beginning. It started out as a simple sandwich bar offering healthy snacks, but now they cook menus and run a home delivery as well. In lunch time, the buffet is always full and might run out of the menus, so it’s advised to order the menu the previous day.

Despite its name, Nemsüti sells now cookies as well. All of them home made, with brown sugar and lots of fruits. Delicious, of course.

Arriba is a recently opened Mexican fast food restaurant which has rapidly become popular, especially with the yuppie crowd (as far as I observed) and American expats craving for their Tex-Mex fix. The food is very nice – maybe not up to what you’d get in Mexico or some parts of the U.S. (I wouldn’t really know), but certainly the best I or my American friends have ever had in Budapest.

The place operates on the same “pick your own components” system as, say, Subway: you choose the base for you taco or burrito, the type of meat, and hand pick from a selection of various sauces, spices and veggies. The food is accompanied by a very nice selection of drinks, including Horchata (rice milk with cinnamon), Margarita, and various Mexican beers you can only get in maybe two or three places in Budapest.

While Taquerias are traditionally takeaways, Arriba also has plenty of seating on two levels. It’s a delightful place to sit down for you meal, with warm, colourful tables and adorable „faux kitsch” murals that really add to the upbeat vibe. Just be aware that the place can get quite crowded, and you might have no option but to take away your order and eat it elsewhere. Personally, I’ve had good luck so far late in the evening and just after lunchtime.

Centrál is a very elegant, old style coffee house and restaurant, a bit on the expensive side, but worth a look if you want to know what Pest was like a hundred years ago.

Thanks to Hungary’s proximity and, let’s say, historical contact with Turkey, coffee culture has always been big around here, but probably never so much so as in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Coffee houses were meeting points of the intellectual elite and the regular haunts of artists and journalists, some of who actually lived in coffee houses. Centrál Kávéház already existed back then, and even though it fulfilled other functions during the communist era, the new management is reaching back to the golden age for inspiration, and as far as looks go, they’re doing a good job.

The place looks exactly as it must have looked back then, and the selection of freely readable newspapers by the entrance is also a fitting touch.

The place is divided into a restaurant area, and a coffee house which is more appropriate for sitting down for a bit of a rest while sipping some tea or coffee. As for the food, it’s always been good when I tried it, but a bit pricey. However, if you want to sit down somewhere in the middle of the day to chat and look at passersby, Centrál has the perfect ambience for that – and a few teas or coffees won’t break the bank.

Szimpla is hands-down the best known and most popular of Budapest’s “kert”-s(“gardens”) – courtyards of condemned or just abandoned buildings transformed into outdoor summer pubs, originally catering mostly for a young, bohemian clientele. As such, it has all the typical accroutements: crumbling architecture, plain but sturdy benches and tables, beer, totally kooky decor, lots of noise, beer, heavily stickered and graffitied toilets, and beer.

While there are many establishments that follow the same recipe, Szimpla is unique for having its own open-air movie theater, where they often play art movies, sparsely screened documentaries and the like. In recent years, they’ve also covered part of the venue with a roof to let them stay open all year round, and expanded into the upper floor, where you can also get some hot grub with your drinks.

Recently, I’ve heard some friends complain that Szimpla is getting too popular and thus too mainstream these days. Well, maybe that’s true – sometimes the crowd and the noise does get a bit too much for my tastes -, but it’s still more than worth checking out if you’re in town. Loud, friendly, visually lush and exciting; a great place to go when the company you desire is more upbeat than sublime.

Also, it’s one of the very few places in town where you can get cider. Pretty expensive – low-quantity import is bound to be pricey -, but there you have it: if you really, really want the stuff, you can get it here.

Bangla Büfé is a tiny Bangladeshi buffet / restaurant that offers great value for you money. It’s a rather special place, since this cuisine is hardly represented in Budapest at all – at least I couldn’t name another venue, that’s for sure. It’s perhaps very Budapest-like, then, that the (probably) single Bangladeshi place is not some large, swanky restaurant, but rather a tiny, tiled, one-roof affair with only a small handful of tables and an old gas stove in the kitchen.

The menu is rather small – one single page -, but I warmly recommend every single item on it. The food is fresh, always very tasty, and just the right amount: you can have your fill, but you won’t end up overly satiated. For those unfamiliar with Bangladeshi cuisine, there are large photographs of every dish.

There are two notes I must add. One, Bangla Büfé also functions as a takeaway. Two, the cuisine is all Halal – following Islamic law. This is very lucky for you if you happen to be Muslim, but a tiny bit inconvenient for those who like their curry or biryani with beer, as Halal and alcohol do not mix. Still, such a tiny sacrifice is more than worth it at Bangla.

Lehel is Budapest busiest and most popular market. Far from the glitter of the central-market, by Liberty bridge, where everyone will tell you to go (I admit it’s worth it, I even shop there!), Lehel is informal, lively, and 100% authentic.

Everything you may get there is guaranteed Hungarian. No surprise actually since the market is located in the 13th district, a lively Magyar neighbourhood of Budapest. Lehel is however easily reachable from the city-centre by metro 3 or on foot from Nyugati railway station.

The market hall architecture is pretty hard to define, let’s say it’s a crossing between a boat and a Greek temple in kitsch yellowish colours, with some plants for the green touch!

At Lehel, you’ll find all sorts of kolbász (spicy sausages), salamis, meat, libamaj (Hungarian goose liver) but also honey, dairies, some wines, and lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Further on, as you enter, in the middle of the market hall, you’ll find nénis (aunties) selling their own goods: you can bet all that is quite organic!

Once you’re done shopping, go to the upper level, that’s where the büfés (cafetarias) and bars are located. There is also a post office (for those who might have some postcards to drop on the way!). You can have a Hungarian lunch at Lehel ize büfé by the entrance.

For the late-comers, go there an hour at least before the official closing time, the guards are pretty unfriendly! Ah and it’s open on Sunday, which no other market-hall does in town.

When I first moved to Budapest, three years ago, I had just moved out of Bangkok where I lived for half a year. I was missing Thai food badly! Don’t get me wrong: I do like Hungarian food, but sometimes you need a change from your usual ‘pörkölt‘ (hungarian meat stew) or paprika chicken.

So I challenged myself in Budapest and started looking for the best Thai eatery I could possibly find. And by ‘best’ I did not mean the taste of the dishes served only, I meant the atmosphere of the place altogether.

Whereas all the other Thai restaurants in Budapest are far too serious, expensive or fancy, I found Parázs, on Szobi utca 4 by Nyugati railway station, really looked like what I was wishing to find. So I’m happy they opened a little sister restaurant on Kazinczy utca (on the same street as the famous Szimpla kert).

Kis Parázs is not the kind of place to choose for a date: the restaurant space is tiny (there are only a few tables), you’re given plastic glasses but the service is quick, the food is good – though the real Thai noodles they use for Pad-see-iou are missing- and you can see Thai ladies cooking in the kitchen. Plus it has home-delivery (to the nearby districts of Pest).

In a word, it’s the closest you can find to Bangkok street food here in Budapest!
