One of my latest finds in Budapest is Fricska, a new restaurant in central Budapest, that has become my favorite spot for upper-category lunch deals. So glad the folks from Balatoni kör told me about it as I was visiting their own spot at the Balaton lake (you should check them out too!). So what’s so special at Fricska?
Well, first of all the restaurant is set in a cellar (just by the main Budapest boulevard), DIY-design decorated (with a pallet sofa and lots of wood-cases), which is quite unusual for a restaurant of this kind.
Second, the service is nice. No fuss here, just good-food lovers and professional cooks that make sure their customers enjoy what they themselves enjoy preparing and serving. The staff is useful in helping you choose, they speak English well and refill your glass with soda water from a siphon bottle!
Third (or maybe actually first?): the food. Fricska is part of the “new Hungarian gastro wave”. Everything I’ve had so far has been just excellent. They do have daily recommendations that change everyday and prices are reasonable even a la carte. For lunch it’s a real bargain – less than €8 for a 3 course deal, each dish is chosen from various alternatives. If they have it, do try their chocolate soufflé! On top of that, the wine list is as comprehensive as it is well-picked. Book in advance even for lunch!
