I’d always wanted a place which would gather together the English speakers of Budapest but in a fun way, not just the free language circles for locals. The International Meeting Point is just that: they organise weekly events created for people living in Budapest for whatever reason, and every two weeks they do special, colorful happenings.
Upon entering the bar, we immediately got welcome drinks, which made us feel like insiders instead of having that awkward “first time” feeling. We met people from over 20 countries, for example a couple from Kazakhstan from the same small town where we used to live years before. This is something crazy I’d never believe could happen in the Hungarian capital. Honestly, I can’t imagine you wouldn’t be able to find a person you’d get along with there.
I also met a Hungarian whose stamping ground is Ankert; an Israeli yoga teacher who was practicing her Russian, and a guy who needed some encouragement to start talking because he thought he was the only Jamaican living in Budapest – which of course he wasn’t.
Me, a local, and my wife, an expat, just loved what IMP made happen. We learned quite useful things, got helpful advice and made friendships throughout the night. Apart from all that, the place is one of the best ruin bars of Budapest as well. So, if you are open-minded and give it a try, you’ll no doubt get the best guide for Budapest available.
