Liszt Academy – Art nouveau house of music

You might have heard of Liszt Academy at some point. It’s been such an iconic building and institution in the city that it was hard to imagine the building was closed for 3 years.

The good news is that it’s open again! After a meticulous renovation the Liszt Academy (which is a concert hall and a prestigious music school) is properly functioning again, back to its original splendour.

Inaugurated in 1907 after the death of Ferenc (Franz) Liszt, its patron, the Liszt Academy is a mind-blowing Secession building that has nothing to envy of Vienna’s masterpieces. Actually the outside doesn’t say much about the opulence of the inside with dozens of Neo Antique statues, golden ceiling, Zsolnay ceramics and typical Art nouveau paintings.

The main concert room with an excellent acoustic and in terms of design there is no equivalent I can think of, the Parisian Salle Pleyel looks pretty plain next to it!

Zeneakademia – as the Hungarians call it – is now open for visits (everyday at 13:30 no registration needed, costs 3 500Ft) but the best is to make sure you book for the next concert!

Since many gifted students perform here there is always something going on. And mind you it’s not just about classical music, it’s also about folk, jazz and opera (in the smaller room).
