You’ve probably already heard about Hungary’s rich heritage in terms of cakes and pastries. Even if you haven’t you should urgently check Maródi Cukrászda, a big pastry shop, cafe and ice cream parlour, in the 13th district.
There you can forget about Gerbeaud which is found in all the guidebooks (Gerbeaud should be seen for its historic value: the pastries there cost up to 3 times more than at Maródi Cukrászda!)
Pastry shops are aplenty in Budapest but there is only one Maródi Cukrászda! This one has a top quality service, delicious and well presented pastries & cakes, and a big collection of homemade ice cream to choose from (when it’s ice cream season) and of course they serve all sorts of coffees. All that for an affordable price.
What’s even more noticeable is the place, a very huge, modern and comfy 2 floor cafe. Ok it’s lacking the lustre of an old cafe but you can’t have it all! The other (big) difference is that Maródi is open till relatively late which is unusual for these kind of tea-coffee houses!
Last but not least, it is located in the busy residential 13th district, a very Hungarian neighbourhood just by the Danube. Perfect place to get a refill before or after some exercise & strolls on Margitsziget!
