Sophie is the daughter of my good friend and very talented designer Tamara Barnoff. On my very first visit to Tamara’s showroom I was impressed by the paintings and more shocked when Tamara told me it is her daughter’s work. Sophie has a really unique style, her paintings are colorful, the figures are so ethereal that you fly to a magic world, Sophie’s world. I was thinking about how to describe Sophie, but decided to ask her:
Who are you?
Sophie Magalashvili. I was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. I arrived to Budapest at the age of 11. Love this city, specially adore how Hungarians name streets and places: Sun and Wolf Mountains, Big Field or Ladybird street…
When did you start to paint?
I strated drawing when I was 1 year old, we were at my grandma’s country house. I asked my mom to draw me a tree, she told me she couldn’t and asked me to draw the tree as I see it. I was so angry at her but started to draw. I remember I didn’t like when teachers in kindergarten showed how to draw a house or a tree, because it was unnatural. So I had to start to draw the things as I see them.
Who is your favourite painter?
Myself. I love my paintings but to be honest I like Dali, Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, Leonardo, Caravaggio and Niko Pirosmani.
