Tasting Table is a wine shop & hang-out in the nicest part of the 8th district. It’s the brainchild of Carolyn Banfalvi and her husband Gabor, who run a cool boutique tour company called “Taste Hungary” organizing food tours in Budapest and in the whole country. Carolyn is also the author of several publications including a book that’s a bible for Hungarian food lovers!
Tasting Table serves both as an anchor place for their tours, and a regular wine shop / wine-tasting cellar.
It’s a nice brick cellar decorated with small volcanic rocks from Tokaj, the star wine region of Hungary. Making it the perfect place to try and buy wines from most of the 22 wine regions in Hungary, including the widest selection in the city of Tokaj wines, a region the Banfalvis know very well.
I strongly recommend you check their Facebook page for regular events, dinners and wine-tastings open to the public (usually on Thursdays). Or just do like me: include a visit on the last day of your stay to get your Tokaj supply for friends and family! The bottles I pick there with their help are always well-appreciated (and they make perfect packaging for a flight). You get a 10% discount if you buy 6 bottles or more and they do free deliveries within Budapest.
As a bonus, you can also purchase some Hungarian delicacies like Pumpkin seed oil from a small Hungarian producer (which is otherwise quite hard to come by in Hungary), quality powder paprika, unicum and pálinkas.
