Imagine Texan-style smoked barbecue in a barn! Green Street Meats is exactly that. Hidden away on N Green Street, just off Randolph Street which is choc-a-bloc with restaurants and bars, Green Street Smoked Meats is a BBQ lover’s dream come true.
Located in a barn-like loft space, they serve a variety of typical barbecue meats, not grilled, but smoked, which simply melt in your mouth! The small menu offers brisket, beef short ribs and pork belly, and patrons can order it by the pound. Along with the meat, you get the BBQ accompaniments, such as coleslaw, macaroni salad and a very crunchy broccoli salad which is my favourite side. When I need carbs with my proteins, I order the chopped brisket or pulled pork sandwiches which are just as delicious as the smokey hunks of meat.
It is self-service, so patrons line up and watch the chefs at work as they order and pick up their food. The space has a huge bar in the center with many local beers on draft and cocktails like Sweet Tea Drink – bourbon with sweet tea and lemon and Oaxacan Old-Fashioned made with Mezcal. The lights hanging on the ceiling add to the charm with wooden picnic tables as seating. There is a patio open to the elements in the summer and closed off in the winter for the brave. I always keep this as a back-up option for when there is a really long wait at High Five Ramen located under this restaurant.
