There is nothing like visiting a historic theatre to get the feel of a city and neighborhood. The Riviera Theatre, known as the Riv to us locals, has a lot of history but it is still going strong today. Located on the north side of the city, It hosts local and international talent from all genres of entertainment. One weekend you might find a local radio showcase and the next a big traveling act.
The theatre is just right with a capacity of a couple thousand people. From the outside, it doesn’t do much for the eye. The facade has aged and could use a coat or two of paint. However, the inside is decked in ornate architecture. The theatre has a great cozy feel with perfect sight lines from anywhere in the house. Most shows are general admission so it’s possible to get many views during a show. I like to start a concert on the main floor, seeing the act up close and then retreat to the balcony to take in a more relaxed viewing. Even from the balcony you’re right on top of the stage.
The venue has a ton of bars so quickly grab a drink and get back to the show. I always like to visit the Green Mill, across the street, for a cocktail before the show. This historic jazz bar is the perfect place to start a night before the show begins.
Most shows are 18+ or 21+ with a valid ID to enter.
