Classic Vietnamese cuisine is all over Argyle street where Tank Noodle is located. This neighborhood in Chicago is known as Little Vietnam because it’s lined with Vietnamese restaurants, bakeries, shops and markets. Essentially anyone that’s visited the area and enjoys this cuisine has a favorite spot for pho and more, and this is mine.
The inside of Tank Noodle isn’t flashy in any way. The simple dining area is intermixed with round and rectangular tables that almost feel like a cafeteria. There are some Vietnamese decorations scattered on the walls but the star of the restaurant is solely the food.
There is no short cut to making a good pho broth and Tank Noodle does not take any shortcuts. The pho with tripe, meatballs and thinly sliced beef is perfect. This soup always comes out with the works including jalapeños, cilantro, lime, chili sauce and mint, but Tank does such an amazing job that adding these extras isn’t necessary. The pho bowls aren’t too big but are just the right size; there is room to start with an appetizer like the fresh spring rolls with shrimp.
If you’re looking for a low key lunch or dinner spot to enjoy simple Vietnamese cuisine, this is the place.
