A good spy knows not to reveal their true identity, but The Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co. is quick to reveal their true motives.
If you don’t strike up a conversation with the staff, which I highly recommend you do, you won’t know that the simple storefront of funky stationery, spy gadgets and books is actually a front for some not-so-covert operations.
Behind the cashier are offices and a classroom where the non-for-profit 826 Chicago organizes writing workshops for children ages 6-18. Those books you see on the wall are written by local students in these local and nationwide workshops, and they’re brilliant as they are hilarious.
The books are in constant rotation, as the workshops focus on different writing skills and topics. Therefore, each visit is unique; one might find you purchasing a book titled “Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country,” a collection of young students’ letters to former President Obama (it’s as hilarious as you’d think it would be), or a more sobering collection of essays titled “Around That Age I Liked to Play With Fire,” with true stories from various students at Curie Metropolitan High School about teen life.
Anything you pick is a winner, and all proceeds go to 826 Chicago.
