Bolsjefabrikken Copenhagen (by Jeppe Krarup)

Bolsjefabrikken is largely the reason why i wanted to write reviews about Copenhagen, because this has got to be on of the coolest spots in Copenhagen.

There are many like it all through Europe, but this one is ours.

Its the most fun in the summertime, because you can chill on the rooftops and play outside, but it is quite beautiful when its covered in snow in the wintertime as well.

The place used to be a Rumballfactory, (which is what Bolsjefabrikken means, though some people call it “The Candy Factory as well), then after it was shut down, the story goes that a rich man bought the ground and gave it to the young people, and then went into a coma, so they have it indefinitely now, but i’m not entirely sure if its just a tall tale, but its a fun story anyway :P

The factory is quite big, with both a large hall and a 2 story building, all of them filled with couches, bars and various art projects.

The art projects are the biggest thing at Fabrikken at the moment, seeing that they have workshops a couple of times a month, where people can experiment with different kinds of materials to create something to decorate the place.

They also have some projects for the crafty people with technical know-how, which includes making a kitchen and building bridges between rooftops, stuff that normally would be hard and boring, but the people at the factory makes it fun.

The many rooms are often used by different political parties for their monthly gatherings, and many other social organisations, so there’s always somebody at the factory.

They also have parties with musical performances and other kinds of entertainment, so when you’re in Copenhagen you should definitely check if there’s something going down at the factory.

And say hi from Tue :)

I just found out that in Melbourne they call bike lanes Copenhagen Lanes and if you ever have been in Copenhagen you’ll know why. We do looove our bikes! And at Bymuseet (The Museum of Copenhagen) you can see a special exhibition on the bicycle culture of Copenhagen. It presents the history of bicycle tradition as well as our local favorites like the Long John and Christiania bikes. It explores the biking habits of Copenhageners and focuses on bicycles in literature, art and music. I mean – almost every Dane know the children song “Jeg er så glad for min cykel” (I’m so fond of my bike).

And I must admit I haven’t seen the exhibition myself yet – but it is on my December to-do list – and I will bring my kids. Because you can also see an exhibition made by the super talented Shane Bronx who can make wonderful things from – well, junk. He’s doing a show for children on tv, has written books and has taught loads of Danish kids that junk can be turned into treasures just by using your imagination – and a glue gun!

So come to the museum for a look into the lives of Danish people. Big and small.

To get a view of the way we ride our bikes in fair Copenhagen go to the very cool site Copenhagen cycle chic.

Café Øieblikket Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

“Øieblikket” is an old spelling of the Danish word meaning “the moment”. Well chosen for a place that lends itself for some very pleasant moments on the Copenhagen harbour front.

The café is located inside the famous “Black Diamond” building housing part of the Danish Royal Library but has outdoor serving, outside the winter season. The café itself is nice, though nothing special, but with absolutely competent coffee and sandwiches. It is definitely about the location. Both the building and its surroundings.

The audience is a good mixture of tourists and local people. The Royal Library is a research library so there are often students with laptops. Next to the café, lies the Royal Library bookstore which is worth a visit, also.

Canal Tours Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

One great way of experiencing Copenhagen is by boat. Since many years now, there have been several operators offering guided tours of the local seaways (see below). They all operate out of the Gl. Strand area where you buy tickets and embark.

The city is built on and around the coastline, and going out to sea… to see… gives a different and interesting perspective. In many ways the guides offer a compressed introduction to much of Copenhagen’s history over the last 300-400 years or so. And good photo-opportunities too.

One good piece of advice is to bring sensible clothing if the wind is up, or there is a chance of rain. Otherwise you stand a good chance of getting wet. Nothing dramatic, just saying.

And also this: Apart from the guided tours, there is also a “water bus” product that you can use to get around. One/two day tickets, and you embark or disembark as needed at various stops around the greater harbour area. More info at Gl. Strand or here (two different operators): http://www.canaltours.com/dct/en or http://www.nettobaadene.dk/

Cinnober Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

Cinnober, cinnabar:
A bright red mineral consisting of mercury sulfide. It is the only important ore of mercury and is sometimes used as a pigment.

Copenhagen has, for a year now, been gifted with this lovely little ore of inspiration, a book and paper shop solely dedicated to visual inspiration – illustration, packaging, graphic design, art, photography, etc. Anything a creative heart desires.

The place has a really warm feel to it. You can tell that there is a lot of love and energy going into carefully exhibiting every little book and gem around the shop in aesthetic displays. It’s all about, not just seeing the books, but enjoying their tactility and making you fall in love with them – which you will! Leaving this place without buying something has proved very dfficult…

Apart from books and paper products, you can also buy limited prints from various Danish illustrators who appear in the shop from time to time signing artwork and sipping champagne.

Cinnober is located in the city centre close to Rundetårn and just off Købmagergade, one of the busiest pedestrian shopping streets. Please don’t miss it.

CMYK kld Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

The beautifully decorated little shop CMYK kld in Jægersborggade is quite a curiosity. Within 30 m2 only the owner has put together nothing less than a print factory, a bookshop, an artist/designer shopping mall, an animation box, a drawing/print desk, a poster tube, a card house and a gallery. The best way to introduce yourself to the place is if you visit on the first Thursday of each month, where the entire street is open till late for their “Late Night Hunting” event. For this CMYK has invented a concept called “7 o’clock Performer” where various bands and/or artists perform live in the tiny window sill of the shop. In addition to the often quite quirky performances beers are only 10 kr., so its definitely something not to be missed!

1. The Print Factory
…was the first invention when the shop opened in 2006. Here you can choose one of the many A4 sized artworks by named artists and illustrators, have it printed and framed to take with you for only 85 kr. Part of the fun is the steps you have to go through to buy it which is like a little performance in its own right. Go see for yourself.

2. The Book Shelve
… is an artwork in itself assembled from various wooden chairs cut up and put back together to form a beautiful book shelve painted silver grey as everything else in the shop. On the shelves you will find zines, magazines, art books, cartoons and catalogues by independent publishers or individuals, all focused on visuals.

3. The Shopping Mall
… consist of 30 square boxes on a wall each representing a shop “owned” by an artist or designer. The selected artists/designers can display anything they want to, which have resulted in some fine miniature exhibitions. All the objects are of course for sale.

4. The Art Gallery
… consist of three walls representing the contrary to the print factory with original artworks by changing groups of artists, cartoonists or the like. Changing exhibitions every 2-3 months.

5. The Drawing/Print Desk
…a desk with piles of drawings and original prints with works ranging between 350-1000 kr.

6. The Poster Tube
…little “trees” of tubes with A3 posters from 200 kr.

7. The Card House
…postcards by various artists, including some made by the owner who is originally a graphic designer herself.

8. Animation Minute
…a box you can peak into and watch short animation films. The films change once a month with each “7 o’clock Performer” night.

It is a very charming little place full of surprises and creativity. Make sure you don’t miss it!

You can also join their group on Facebook for regular news on events, concerts, etc.

Copenhagen Jazzhouse Copenhagen (by Mikkel Skjoldan Svenningsen )

Copenhagen Jazzhouse is more than one thing. First of all it is, as you might have guessed, a jazz house. There are concerts almost every day. Mostly jazz, but also tango, soft rock and other genres are represented. Especially the tango concerts are fabulous, because people actually hit the floor and dance the tango. Both young and old, practiced and less practiced. Not just on the dance floor but in front of the bar and between the tables, people swing around like true tango alley cats.

Very different kinds of people come at the jazz house and the atmosphere is most often positive. People who come to the concerts are usually true lovers of music and it’s always easy to talk the ears off someone who shares your passion for some strange genre.

After the concerts, Copenhagen Jazzhouse turns into a swinging nightclub. Latin, acidjazz, soul, house and the likes of it is played and people of all ages come to sway their hips and flirt with each other. The bar serves good cocktails (definitely a decent cosmopolitan), excellent Danish beers and delicious wine. If you are not much into dancing, you can sit on the ground floor, where the music is not too loud. The ground floor has a bar of its own and conversations are easily made.

The nightclub opens after the concert and it is nice not having to bother with where on earth you are going to go afterwards. During winter and temperatures well below zero degrees Celsius, pub crawling can be less enjoyable. Therefore, you might as well enjoy a full evening in the Jazz House.

Designer Zoo Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

At Vesterbrogade 137 is a true mecca of crafts and design named Designer Zoo. At this 800 m2 shop you can not only buy beautiful things – you can also talk to to the artists as they are working in the shop as well as creating.

The place opened ten years ago with just tree designers. Now they are eight in the fields of knitwear, glass, ceramics, furniture, jewelery, unique arts and so much more!

The idea is to make as much of the production in Denmark. They have very delicate ceramics jewelery (that I totally adore) as well as sculptural glass vases, pillows and bowls with little princes inside. The displays are really delightful as well.
Designer Zoo is also a gallery with about four shows a year. Read and see more about current show on the homepage. Event though the pieces in the shop are fine design, the prices are very reasonable. A lot of the artists also make pieces to order, so you can be a part of the process as well.

So if you want a different look at cool Danish design this is the place to go. And the shop is actually on the way to the real Zoo, so if you’re feeling wild you are going the right way!

Din Nye Ven Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Din Nye Ven is directly translated Your New Friend. And this place is. The place is decorated in a very retro style with different chairs and camping tables which gives the place it’s quirky charm. The guests are mostly young people and very laid back and friendly. You can choose from different kinds of beer along with coffee and cold drinks. They even have their own beer called Din Nye Øl (Your new beer – but you might have guessed). According to fellow Spotter, Mette Walsted, it is very tasty and nice – and at a price of only 20 kr. a bottle, you can strech your budget and still have a night out!

Located in the very charming Latin quarter and with a monthly programme of great acts, DJ’s and art shows this is a great meeting point as well as the place to go for a night on the town. They even sometimes arrange ping-pong tournaments. Please check Din Nye Vens Myspace for special events and updates.

Folkets Hus Copenhagen (by Bjarke Bisgaard)

Folkets hus (meaning “House for the people”), is a house dedicated to all people, and have been the joy of the neighbourhood for about 25 years now. It is more or less managed by the people going there, and anyone can join in.

There is so much stuff to do in Folkets hus, and I don’t have time to mention them all, but here’s some:

Folkets Hus spillefolk: Musicians arrange the “Ramslag” with music and dancing 2 Fridays a month.

Folkets Hus Choir called Ørevox (meaning “Earwax”) sings each Monday night.

Arabian dancing and folkekøkken (same thing in Germany : Vokü, Volksküche), where volunteers serve ecological meals every sunday evening.

Entry to all events are free, and most food and coffee, you can decide yourself how much you want to pay.

The volunteers at the house are also the arrangers of “The Peacewatch” standing at Christiansborg (Cityhall), most days of the year, in protest of the Iraqi & Afghan wars.

There’s also a forum dedicated to the people interested in philosophy, they agree on a book, and then they discuss, it is held on no specific night, so ask in the café Under Konstruktion.

Café Under Konstruktion, meaning “Under Construction”, which is a wordplay, because the café is always under construction, always evolving into something more.

The Café aims to cast focus on the consumerism and conformity of the common café culture, therefore everybody who works there are volunteers, and they arrange very cheap vegan food, and most of the profit goes to political projects and the maintenance of the café of course.

Folkets hus is truly a house for the people, i hope you will enjoy it as much as i have ;)

Husflid Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

It’s not too much to call Husflid in Blågårdsgade a crafters paradise. You can find everything you need to sew or make anything. From headbands to pillows and beyond. And everything is so inspirational! Beads, ribbons, fabric, yarn – you’ve got it!

Everything is carefully chosen and oozes of old times and retro style. You can find vintage treasures like badges, bead necklaces and patches to iron on. You can also find a lot of cool vintage clothing for kids, so it’s a great place to find a unique and original present for the little ones in your life. And maybe you can find some cool re-cycled fabric for great christmas presents?

Rikke – the kind lady owner of the shop – also offers cute DIY kits for making your own bracelets and lots more. The back half of the shop is her crafting table where there is always something exiting going on. She has a great eye for putting stuff together and I always love to stop by and get inspired.

Husflid is an old Danish word for craft and arts. It’s becoming more and more popular to make your own stuff and that way get something personal and unique. If you don’t know where to start your project – stop by Husflid and you are well on your way into the world of making. Enjoy!

Kvarterhuset Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Kvarterhuset in Jemtelandsgade is my local library, but it’s not all books. It is so much more! The location is a great big house where all kinds of cultural events take place. Click here for the recent program.

In the bright hall you can read newspapers, magazines and just hang out. But my favorite part is the café located to the right when you go in. The service is friendly and attentive, the prices are very reasonable.

The thing I like most about Kvarterhuset is that it is located sort of out of the way, but it’s still easy to get to. It’s just behind the church on Holmbladsgade – close to Amagerbrogade and Amagerbro metro station. And just behind the building is Prags Boulevard – a 1,8 km. park and activity area designed by Kristine Jensens Tegnestue in 2005. Read more about the area on Copenhagen X.

LiteraturHaus Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

Beat poetry, Russian propaganda posters, Cuban short films, stand-up opera, French avant-garde, Palestinian sounds, free-jazz performances, Flamenco, spoken word, written words, poetry slam, literary debates, words, words, words… They come to life in an old refurbished Methodist church in Møllegade dating back 1892. A quirky house of literature, Literaturhaus is the first place in Denmark solely dedicated to… well, words.

The idea comes from Germany where so-called “literature houses” are more common, brought to Copenhagen by Paul Opstrup the initiator of LiteraturHaus and run by volunteers. A hub for authors, critics, literates, students and anyone with a love for words Literaturhaus always attracts a variety of people young and old.

The building in itself is also interesting. The raw looking physical space with its high ceiled, sparsely refurbished church room and the intimate living room style café in the basement makes Literaturhaus a suited venue for performances of all kinds. At times somewhat avant-garde for my taste, however you will be guaranteed a new experience and plenty of food for thought.

Apart from having your soul and mind feed,

the cosy café downstairs offers homemade organic meals and drinks every Thursday evening – often there is a vegetarian special as well. Both events and meals are very budget friendly; a meal is generally at 35-40 kr.

Overdrevet Copenhagen (by Tue Rasmussen)

Overdrevet (meaning “Exaggeration” as a reference to the Punk lifestyle) is the name of Det Nye Ungdomshus. The new name refers to the much loved Jagtvej 69 Youthhouse, which was torn down some time ago.

Overdrevet has tried to recreate the mood and activities of the old youth-house, and succeeded, it won’t ever be the same as Jagtvej69 which was loved by the alternative movement all over Europe, but its a start.

The place is more or less dedicated to the “Young Punk” movement, meaning hard rocking music, drinking & Living, the fact that their bar is called “The Deathmachine” serves as a hint.

But there’s much more to the youth-house than that, and the people going there are very open-minded toward all kinds of people, completely blind to appearance or music taste.

When the place opened, they were very keen on letting everyone see the place, so during the morning and afternoon, the parents, grandparents and children came to see the new place, while listening to jazzy easy listening music and watching galleries with the history of Jagtvej 69.

During the evening the young people took over the place with many types of music, punk & hip-hop included of course.

A perfect example to describe the agenda of the new youth-house, is the monthly hiphop gathering with the motto : “We’re anti-commercialist, anti-profit, anti-sexist, anti-racist, anti-drugs & Anti-Anti”, and as you might have suspected the people coming to this place, are on the far far left on the political scale, but as said, anyone is welcome.

There is also a very nice café upstairs for reading books, the books are of free use, most are in danish, but it should be possible to find something in English, German or french as well, only open during the day though.

It’s wicked, punk and exciting, see you at Overdrevet ;)

Paludans Bog & Cafe Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Paludans Bog & Café is located in the inner city amidst the Latin quarter and the main pedestrian shopping streets. And, appropriately, right opposite to the university main building and the University Library building from 1861 (and still in service for the political science people).

The café serves beer and wine, but the emphasis is on high quality teas and coffee – all acquired from Fair Trade suppliers. So if you are a supporter of the Fair Trade concept, the feel-good factor should kick in here. The menu is limited to soup, buns with (good) cheese or ham and one or two cakes.

The place is fairly large and loaded with books, being, as it is, a hybrid (proper) book store and café. The book store sells both new and used books and was already well established before the café was created in 2001. It is now a tradition, that on Thursdays at 17:00, an author, poet or other literary person comes to the café and recite, chair a debate or something. These sessions are mostly in Danish though.

Rosenborg Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

The beautiful Rosenborg Castle lies in the middle of the King’s Gardens – a very popular spot where Copenhageners play soccer, eat pizza, drink beer, read books, draw, play with their children and generally have a good time. Unfortunately the garden is a little too popular for its own good and often the lawns are packed with people. One of the gates of the garden is directly opposite the cinemateque and you can enjoy yourself and some lunch or dinner in the park before catching a movie.

The Gardens are well kept and groomed, but in a relaxed and natural way that doesn’t make sitting in them feel like vandalism. In spring and summertime, the Garden’s are overflowing with purple and pink flowers, the grass is green and the copper beeches give great shelter if it’s a little windy.

But if you’re already enjoying the King’s Gardens, you might as well visit the castle and see the spectacular crown jewels. The Castle is now a museum that holds some of Denmark’s greatest cultural treasures, so go see them while you’re there.

Whether you want to go inside the castle or not, it’s very beautiful to behold. If you’re not the restaurant/café type, bringing your lunch into the gardens is a great idea. You can sit on the grass or one of the benches and just hang out, while looking at this little fairytale castle in the middle of the city. It’s SO Copenhagen!

Statens Museum for kunst Copenhagen (by Bjarke Bisgaard)

Seeing that this is the National Art Gallery, it is quite bigger than a regular spot. But I really don’t want anybody to miss it, it is much much more than just a big ole boring museum.

Most of the museum is free at all times, but to see the special exibit you have to pay around 80kr.

And with a little help from the picture, you can figure that this is no small treat, seeing that the museum is HUGE!

The special exibit at the moment is by a danish artist from the 17th century called Nicolai Abildgaard - A world in rebellion. It has to do with themes like Revolution, Sex, Darkness, Love, Ghosts, it’s a very interesting lifeswork.

And though it is the National Art Gallery, there is lots of amazing art from overseas as well. And the exhibition is not limited to boring paintings (which by the way, aren’t boring at all)

There are also sculptures, installations, and media projects, all both big&small, picturesque& abstract, they have it all. And that is just the permanent exhibition on, the special exhibit which changes every few months is even more interesting.

There is also something called The X-room (X-rummet) that also changes every couple of months, but also is a part of the free exhibit.

At the moment it is an architectural masterpiece, it’s some ordinary rooms, made fascination by not being fascinating at all, but at one point you will realise that you’re in a maze, and that’s when it gets a bit creepy, to find the maze, try walking out of one of the exits and follow a long hall that leads to many doors. (sounds like something out of Alice In Wonderland, i know :P )

Enjoy!

Tage Andersen Boutique og Interiør Copenhagen (by Bjarke Bisgaard)

”I see trees of green…….. red roses too
I see ‘em bloom….. for me and for you
And I think to myself…. what a Flowery world

A bit corny, i know, but it fits so well :)

Tage Andersen is the name of the flower & interior artist behind these wonderful creations, he showcases a wide range of decorating abilities and sense of interior design.

The shop is actually quite small, but feels very big, seeing that there is both a lower floor, which is where you enter, an upper floor, which you get to by walking up some windy stairs, and then there is also a small outdoors area.

The whole shop is filled with bright earthly colors, and leaves you quite breathless in all its natural charm.

There are plants, flowers, paintings and even para quites, and it is literally everywhere you look.

Every piece is amazing, from the small fountains to the huge sculptures, and even the architecture of the place is interesting, with its windy stairs and a mixture of private home and public shop.

The art pieces are for sale, but i think it is out of the price range of most travelers, so i would advise you just to ogle at all the marvelous little masterpieces of this boutique.

All the pieces are made by an old bearded man, who is often in the shop, he and the rest of the employees are very friendly and eager to hear what you think of the place.

The Laundromat Café Copenhagen (by Laundromat)

If you are traveling for a longer period of time and need to get your dirty clothes washed, then there is no better place to do so than at Laundromat Café in Elmegade. With the wireless Internet you can even check your emails whilst smelly socks take care of themselves in one of the four shiny red launderettes in the back.

Whilst waiting for your laundry, or if you just happened to pop by the café to enjoy a good strong cappuccino, you can enjoy a good selection of magazines and newspapers or read one of their 4000 books, all of which are stylishly lined up in the bar according to colour. Lounge on the red leather diner style benches and have a look at the wall boxes decorated by young local artists or designers.

Wallpaper a few years ago labeled the place “the worlds hippest launderette” and without having visited all the launderettes in the world so far I would have to agree. The general crowd here is the young urbanites, designers, creatives, and students. Hip and arty. A flashy Mac laptop is more common here than not.

Only downside to the place is the prices, which are, well… quite hip! Laundromat is probably the most expensive place to enjoy your coffee in Nørrebro. Saying that the homemade food and the overall superior quality make me come back to enjoy the cozy atmosphere. Besides, not many cafés in Copenhagen are open this early, 08:00, so often it becomes my morning hang out before a long day of work.

It is one of those waterfront spots. The Royal Danish Play House is the newly inaugurated (2008) play scene of the Royal Danish Theatre and is located beautifully on the waterfront – just opposite the also fairly new opera.

Apart from the theatre itself, there is a restaurant, a cocktail bar and the café – all of them open for all including non theater goers.

If you want to dine somewhere out of the ordinary, I recommend the restaurant. Named after Ofelia, Hamlet’s lass, the restaurant is set in this huge, yet strangely intimate, industrial room with nothing but space, sky and the water. And white linen tablecloths. Definetely. The kitchen matches the unique setting with excellent offerings for brunch, lunch and dinner.

The café serves good quality without being cosmic about it. Light meals, fine teas, quality beer and of course coffee variants to your heart’s content.

And then there is the cocktail bar, in this perfect setting, which is quite serious about its cocktails and will serve you classics as well as some unique house cocktails. Opens at 18:30.

The place has free wireless Internet (indoors – possibly reachable outside – didn’t check). I recommend the website with more details, i.e. wine, actual menus and so on.
