Bang & Jensen Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

At Bang & Jensen you can get it all. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and all kinds of beer, coffee and cocktails. You could almost live here all day – and it would be quite a nice day, too. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are ample.

The places opened back in 1997 and was one of the first cafes in the street – if not the first. Now the area is full of great little places, but this is the place to go! A lot of the young people in Vesterbro uses the place as a mix of study hall, meeting point and living room. That makes the place feel like home.

The service is friendly and the place is usually quite packed. They also have free wireless Internet, so bring your laptop along.

Bang & Jensen is a great place to check out the current street style of Copenhagen. Just get a place by the window or look at the other guests. Style everywhere!

By the way – the kitchen closes at 19:30 on Saturdays to make room for cocktails.

Café Hacienda Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Cafe Hacienda is located in one of Copenhagen’s central parks - H.C. Ørstedsparken just outside the inner city. Green lawns, a pond and two playgrounds. One of them right next to Cafe Hacienda.

So if you are are travelling with children and need to get away from the hustle and bustle, this might be a place to go. And if you are not travelling with children and need to get away from the hustle and bustle, well… this might be a place to go too.

The kitchen was seriously updated this year by the new owner and offers salads, various sandwiches including some very nice grilled variants, a quality burger, humus, tomato soup with pesto, smoked salmon and before 13:00 each day, a full brunch menu.

Café Norden Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

If there is such a thing as the Copenhagen mainstay café, it must be Café Norden. Very mainstream, very well located (at Amagertorv on the section between the main pedestrian streets Strøget and Købmagergade) and very big.

The café occupies two floors and has an almost industrial quality to it. But despite the scale, the place has a nice atmosphere with the heavy inspiration of a Jugend style Wienna café anno 1895. Complete with specially designed opal lamps on the walls. The ground floor is often busy and can be somewhat crowded and cramped at times, whilst the spacious upper floor has a calmer setting with larger tables, a high ceiling and red leather couches for the lucky ones. The window seats offer an interesting view of Copenhagen’s central hustle-and-bustle shopping havoc.

The offering is of the well assorted café with all sorts of coffee, tea and other hot drinks and also beers and soft drinks. Along with different (good) cakes, ice cream and so on. The kitchen is what you might call “heavy café” and offers both light food and snacks as well as more substantial meals, including a very talented tomato soup, full-meal burgers, lasagna and a quality pasta dish. In fact, everything is quality.

Prices reflect this and are fairly high – at least when it comes to food. The place can be a little hectic at times and you may have to be patient to cope. But generally the café is well staffed and things flow well.

Café Norden has outdoor serving all seasons, weather permitting and does not accept reservations for tables.

This café is almost a little secret, but I want as many people as possible to know about it.

The outside is not doing the very, very cosy inside justice – and I really think this is one of the most cosy, or “hyggelige” as we say, Danish cafés in Copenhagen. Café Retro is the perfect place to go after a long cold walk when you need to get warm, have a nice cup of coffee and just feel good.

And what makes you feel so good at Café Retro? Not just the great coffee and comfy sofas. But also the very kind and friendly service. And guess what – the bartenders are voluntary workers and all profits go to Africa and India! That is just so great!

The menu is limited to soup and snacks, but they have lots of coffee, beer and wine, so you’ll be just fine.

The café is dedicated to live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. But they also support a wide range of other cultural events. Keep up to date with current events on the website.

Café Spisebilletten Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

The café has a warm and friendly atmosphere and is definitely worth considering if you want a moment’s peace and quiet in the course of a shopping or sightseeing marathon. The combination of a downplayed tasteful interior and quality products is just appealing, in my opinion, and the original art on the walls just adds to this. Spisebilletten has that no-nonsense quality that I appreciate very much.

The kitchen is mainstream café and servings are made on the fly. You can choose from salads and sandwiches and a soup of the week and in addition to a broad selection of coffees and (high quality) teas you can have beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks.

There is a breakfast offer until 12:00 and between 12:00 – 14:00, brunch. Prices are average.

Café Øieblikket Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

“Øieblikket” is an old spelling of the Danish word meaning “the moment”. Well chosen for a place that lends itself for some very pleasant moments on the Copenhagen harbour front.

The café is located inside the famous “Black Diamond” building housing part of the Danish Royal Library but has outdoor serving, outside the winter season. The café itself is nice, though nothing special, but with absolutely competent coffee and sandwiches. It is definitely about the location. Both the building and its surroundings.

The audience is a good mixture of tourists and local people. The Royal Library is a research library so there are often students with laptops. Next to the café, lies the Royal Library bookstore which is worth a visit, also.

Den Franske Café Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Let it be said right away: I like this place best in the summer. As a café, it is very nice with a tasteful interior and the kitchen and bar are capable of providing a good mainstream product. And this, of course, goes both winter and summer. But in the summertime, its location on the lakeside of one of Copenhagens large, artificial lakes, makes it a gem.

Den Franske Cafe is located on the dividing line between inner Copenhagen and the residential areas of Østerbro. And therefore lends itself perfectly to being a waypoint on a walk along or around one or more of those lakes. Then you can sit and rest outside, under the trees and watch the swans, or people on an evening stroll as you drink your café au lait. Not at all bad.

The menu offering is actually quite broad with typical café/bistro dishes and a breakfast or brunch menu all mornings. And there is a bar capable of beers, wines and even a couple of different cocktails.

Prices are fair to average.

Copenhagen’s best vegetarian and organic meals are served at Den Grønne Kælder located in the heart of the city center. The setup is easy:

1. Ask yourself exactly how hungry you are.

2. Define the number and combination of hot dishes and salads you think you can manage.

3. Then choose (if you can) from the mouthwatering banquet of meals on the menu.

It always takes me years to choose, it all just sounds so good – and it is! The hot dishes range from portobello mushrooms over spinach lasagna to potato and tofu stew. The salads are equally lip smacking, I recommend the beet root or the cabbage and apple as winners.

On a general note the chef is not shy in her use of cream, cheese and oil in the foods, meaning that you will never leave Den Grønne Kælder hungry or unsatisfied.

And don’t forget to treat yourself to the delicious homespun hummus as well (comes with some combinations of dishes) – it rocks!

My best recommendations to this place – and it’s cheap too!

Din Nye Ven Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Din Nye Ven is directly translated Your New Friend. And this place is. The place is decorated in a very retro style with different chairs and camping tables which gives the place it’s quirky charm. The guests are mostly young people and very laid back and friendly. You can choose from different kinds of beer along with coffee and cold drinks. They even have their own beer called Din Nye Øl (Your new beer – but you might have guessed). According to fellow Spotter, Mette Walsted, it is very tasty and nice – and at a price of only 20 kr. a bottle, you can strech your budget and still have a night out!

Located in the very charming Latin quarter and with a monthly programme of great acts, DJ’s and art shows this is a great meeting point as well as the place to go for a night on the town. They even sometimes arrange ping-pong tournaments. Please check Din Nye Vens Myspace for special events and updates.

Flottenheimer Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

The Café Flottenheimer is very charming. A lot of effort has gone into making the place real homey and nice. And it is. Mixed furniture and a rustique feeling.

Located in the absolute center of the city, the cafe (and bar actually) is very nice for just dropping in. Guests are all sorts. Shoppers and chillers. There is a free WIFI network available and you frequently see people working there.

The menu is quite extensive for a small place like this – with convincing offerings in both the food and drink department.

Grand Teatret Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Grand Teatret has been a cinema since 1913, and today, over 300 of the cinema’s total of 773 seats are still in the original cinema hall (Grand 3). There are 6 halls all in all.

The cinema is an institution on the Danish cultural scene, specifically catering for the European films audience. There is also a strong focus on the domestic film products, which of course may be of limited value to foreigners as they are mostly in Danish and – evidently – not subtitled in any language. But anyway.

The cinema has a very tasteful café and bar to visit, that offers light food (sandwich scale) and coffee/tea, wine, beer and proper alcohol like whiskey and such. Prices are very reasonable.

If you want to see a European movie of good quality, Grand (as it is known in Copenhagen) is definitely an option. And it is located less than 100 meters from Strøget near Rådhuspladsen.

Granola Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Granola is a very retro and very charming… café – or whatever. The place is 30’s style right down to the original industrial lamps and counter, well worn tables and terazzo floor.

The offering on the food and liquids side is basically café style and I want to mention the great brunch menu where you can either go for the full package or pick and choose between the various “brunch components”. Nice if you, like me, just want coffee and scrambled eggs and bacon with your pancakes. I mean, who needs orange juice and yogurt?

In addition to serving delicious coffee and cakes to the busy urbanites, Granola sells various high quality food products as well – teas, coffee – stuff like that. Which is why I am reluctant to just call café on Granola. The decor spells shop, industrial, Bauhaus just a little, maybe some drugstore in there too… oh just go and visit the place. It is very likable, indeed.

Kaffe Kalaset Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

“It was in my grandmothers kitchen at Vasavägen 3 I fell in love with cooking…”

On Vendersgade 16, corner of Nansensgade and Vendersgade, this love for cooking has come to life in the small and cosy Kaffe Kalaset.

Inside lovely vintage radios, record players and framed 50’s magazine covers make up the decorations with a backdrop of the colorful walls. The chairs and tables are all chic secondhand picks of retro style mixed creatively to make a funky, yet laid back atmosphere.

The two owners of Kaffe Kalaset are Swedish and the food a recreation of their grandmothers’ cookbook. A cookbook that I would just love to get my hands on, as the food here is just delicious, made with the everlasting ingredients “simplicity, love and care”.

For a vegetarian like me it even offers quite a few options, which is generally a rarity in Copenhagen. I recommend the vegan burger, which comes with a salad and roasted potatoes from the island of Samsø. The tasty Samsø potatoes are a Danish specialty and highly anticipated each year. With it you could have a pint of Birkebryg or a Bøgebryg – one is a lager the other one sort of ale-like – both really nice draft beer.

Another nice little curiosity (there are too many to name them all) is the blackboard next to the bar where you can leave a treat for your friends. Just write your friends name and the delicacy you have picked for him or her, pay up front to the friendly staff and surprise your friends next time they get there. Sweet.

The only downside is that it gets pretty crowded here, especially on a Friday evening where the temperature and noise levels rise to an incredible high. Still, it is the café I keep coming back to – it is just so lovely.

Kaffebar Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Two steps down in Elmegade 4 you can get great black coffee at Kaffebar. Along with delicious bread, high quality chocolate a wide selection of the and other amazing treats this is a great spot to hang out, read magazines and watch city life in the street outside. It’s also a good place to do some bike-spotting as seen on Copenhagen Cycle Chic. Elmegade is not a wide street, but quite busy and it has a very cool atmosphere with a lot of great shops.

The interior of Kaffebar is very clean and Scandinavian with it’s wood and simple lines. Easy on the eyes in a part of town with so much to see, so this is a great place to reload and get new energy.

A great thing about this place is also that they open at 08:00. which is not normal cafe opening hours in Copenhagen.

Kleistkaffe Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

Located in Frederiksberg right around the corner from the always buzzing street Værnedamsvej, you will find Kleistkaffe, a small and intimate cafe owned by Helle Kleist, author of a series of cook books on healthy food. Both the location and the name makes this place a little bit more expensive than the average café, but the good quality of food and coffee makes up for it.

The best reason to go there is the brunch, which is much better here than in most other places where i have tried my sometimes very poor luck with this otherwise popular late breakfast/early lunch concept. Tortilla, pancakes with syrup, brie, emmentaler, parma ham, delicious homemade rye bread, fruit, juice, yogurt and muesli with a mix of blueberries and almonds on top is what you will get for the price of 105 Kr. You have to order your coffee or tea on the side as its not included in the price.

Most of what is on the menu you can get “to go” as well. They offer a great selection of sandwiches, “healthy lunch”, salads and a soup of the day. So far i have tried their pumpkin and coconut soup with fried nuts and seeds on top and bread on the side – spicy and delicious. The place also offers all sorts of coffee, milkshakes, lassies, smoothies and so on. In summer the sun shines on their sidewalk terrace all during the afternoon and early evening – nice!

A tip would be to take a stroll up Værnedamsvej to feel the almost Parisian vibe of the street, then turn around the corner to sit down for a nice brunch at Kleistkaffe. And last but not least breathe in the fresh air in Frederiksberg Have (see the Frederiksberg Have article) at the end of Frederiksberg Allé.

Kvarterhuset Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Kvarterhuset in Jemtelandsgade is my local library, but it’s not all books. It is so much more! The location is a great big house where all kinds of cultural events take place. Click here for the recent program.

In the bright hall you can read newspapers, magazines and just hang out. But my favorite part is the café located to the right when you go in. The service is friendly and attentive, the prices are very reasonable.

The thing I like most about Kvarterhuset is that it is located sort of out of the way, but it’s still easy to get to. It’s just behind the church on Holmbladsgade – close to Amagerbrogade and Amagerbro metro station. And just behind the building is Prags Boulevard – a 1,8 km. park and activity area designed by Kristine Jensens Tegnestue in 2005. Read more about the area on Copenhagen X.

Lagkagehuset Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

When I really want a treat I go to Lagkagehuset. This is in my humble opinion the best bakery in all of Copenhagen.

Located just in the heart of Christianshavn – by the canal and the metro – it’s a great place to start of the day exploring this beautiful part of town.

You can choose from so many delicious breads and cakes, have coffee, juice and what your heart desire. My favorite at the moment is teacake with raisins. And strawberry cake. And walnut bread. And chocolate muffins. And rasberry muffins. And anything with cinnamon – yum!

You can sit at the counter and look at the people running to and from buses and metro, watch the sightseeing boats sail by and plan your day. But I also recommend taking your baked goods and find a nice bench by the canal a bit away from all the traffic.

This is not, however, the cheapest bakery. But it’s very much woth the extra expence. The service is friendly and swift, and the location is perfect – not to mention that the house also is called Lagkagehuset – Layer cake house.

LiteraturHaus Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

Beat poetry, Russian propaganda posters, Cuban short films, stand-up opera, French avant-garde, Palestinian sounds, free-jazz performances, Flamenco, spoken word, written words, poetry slam, literary debates, words, words, words… They come to life in an old refurbished Methodist church in Møllegade dating back 1892. A quirky house of literature, Literaturhaus is the first place in Denmark solely dedicated to… well, words.

The idea comes from Germany where so-called “literature houses” are more common, brought to Copenhagen by Paul Opstrup the initiator of LiteraturHaus and run by volunteers. A hub for authors, critics, literates, students and anyone with a love for words Literaturhaus always attracts a variety of people young and old.

The building in itself is also interesting. The raw looking physical space with its high ceiled, sparsely refurbished church room and the intimate living room style café in the basement makes Literaturhaus a suited venue for performances of all kinds. At times somewhat avant-garde for my taste, however you will be guaranteed a new experience and plenty of food for thought.

Apart from having your soul and mind feed,

the cosy café downstairs offers homemade organic meals and drinks every Thursday evening – often there is a vegetarian special as well. Both events and meals are very budget friendly; a meal is generally at 35-40 kr.

Madmanifesten Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Madmanifesten is a hidden treasure in Amager. Tucked away in Tyrolgade just by Amagerbrogade and Øresundsvej this very modern place to eat doesn’t have huge signs and flashing lights. They get you on the hook with wonderful meals made from organic products of the season.

The course of the day is what the kitchen wants to cook and that makes this place stand out from the other cafes in the area. The staff is great at telling you about the specials of the day and you can feel that this place is made from love. I can also warmly recommend the weekend brunch buffet.

This is also a good place to take the kids, but don’t worry if you don’t have any – and don’t want the McDonalds playroom next to your dinner. In the back of café is a really cool playroom that almost makes you want to be 7 years old again.

And when you are at Madmanitesten – look up! They have really cool pictures in the ceiling. And the rest of the decor is also beautiful and simple. I especially like the black Verner Panton lamps hanging over all the tables. Please note that the place is usually quite crowded, so reservations are needed if you are a larger group of people.

Månefiskeren Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

It almost seems ridiculous to recommend more spots at Christiania. You might as well go there and see it all, but that wouldn’t make much of a blog, would it?

Månefiskeren is one of my favorite places. Not because the menu holds anything too special or alluring in any way, actually the whole thing is mediocre at best, but because it’s probably the best hangout spot in the entire city. The atmosphere is amazing in summertime outside Månefiskeren, where people eat food, drink cold beers and listen to the DJ, who’s always turning records. You have to be patient if you want to eat something at Månefiskeren – mostly because the staff seems to be stoned all the time and most likely will forget your order entirely.

Luckily you can bring your own food or beverages (no alcohol is served). There is no fancy brunch or anything that resembles it, but if you come at the right time (early!) Månefiskeren will be quiet and you should enjoy a truly Danish breakfast – coffee and white bread with cheese and cucumber, or oatmeal with milk and sugar. During wintertime it is really nice to sit inside with a bun just out of the oven, and a steaming glass of tea.

You can also find Internet and a pool table. Sometimes you may stumble upon a concert at night, but the true bliss lies in the hot summer chill-out with all your friends and half of Copenhagen.

Morgenstedet Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

Just walking through Christiania is guaranteed to open up your eyes to a different and diverse experience. The contrasts are more than evident; worn down buildings, beautiful natural surroundings, the many different types of people, young and old, hippie and punk, drunks and pushers, artists and skaters. Christiania has many colours – and many hidden gems to explore.

One of them is a small, cozy restaurant, a bit out of the way for the general tourist, but not impossible to reach either. Coming through Pusher Street passing by funny sounding places like “The Opera”, “The Moon Fisher”, “Woodstock” and other interesting scenes, finally you will arrive at the gates of a lovely little hidden house on a corner – sounding the lovely name “Morgenstedet”.

Entering through the skewed garden gate you will come into the small, but very warm and charming little restaurant, that will meet you with a well known smell of good homemade food. I can’t think of a more relaxed and cosy place to enjoy a filling, tasty vegetarian meal than here.

There is something wholly unpretentious about it – as goes for most of Christiania. The food is wonderful, prepared with organic ingredients only. The bread is a delic

acy in its own right. Brought in daily from the famous bakery “Lagkagehuset” located at Christianshavn square.

Morgenstedet means “The Morning Place” – which by the way has no reference to the opening hours which are noon till 21:00 daily.

Mormors Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Mormor is Danish for your grandmother on your mothers side, and Mormors is like coming home to grandma’. This place is one of a kind and I highly recommend it. And located in Bredgade with all the galleries and just by Amalienborg Castle this should be on your list.

At Mormors you can get sandwiches, home made cakes, cookies and hot and cold drinks. They also serve breakfast the old fashioned way with oatmeal porridge. Mormor is also modern enough to make a wide range of delicious smoothies. But the most special treat is the biscuit cake or kiksekage as it is called in Danish. This is a layered cake made with biscuits and a very heavy chocolate filling. My mormor used to make this for Christmas, but I can eat this all year round. Great with strong, black coffee.

The cafe is decorated in a cute retro style with floral tapestry, tiny lamps and the atmosphere is peaceful and friendly. So stop buy Mormors and get good taken care of.

Overdrevet Copenhagen (by Tue Rasmussen)

Overdrevet (meaning “Exaggeration” as a reference to the Punk lifestyle) is the name of Det Nye Ungdomshus. The new name refers to the much loved Jagtvej 69 Youthhouse, which was torn down some time ago.

Overdrevet has tried to recreate the mood and activities of the old youth-house, and succeeded, it won’t ever be the same as Jagtvej69 which was loved by the alternative movement all over Europe, but its a start.

The place is more or less dedicated to the “Young Punk” movement, meaning hard rocking music, drinking & Living, the fact that their bar is called “The Deathmachine” serves as a hint.

But there’s much more to the youth-house than that, and the people going there are very open-minded toward all kinds of people, completely blind to appearance or music taste.

When the place opened, they were very keen on letting everyone see the place, so during the morning and afternoon, the parents, grandparents and children came to see the new place, while listening to jazzy easy listening music and watching galleries with the history of Jagtvej 69.

During the evening the young people took over the place with many types of music, punk & hip-hop included of course.

A perfect example to describe the agenda of the new youth-house, is the monthly hiphop gathering with the motto : “We’re anti-commercialist, anti-profit, anti-sexist, anti-racist, anti-drugs & Anti-Anti”, and as you might have suspected the people coming to this place, are on the far far left on the political scale, but as said, anyone is welcome.

There is also a very nice café upstairs for reading books, the books are of free use, most are in danish, but it should be possible to find something in English, German or french as well, only open during the day though.

It’s wicked, punk and exciting, see you at Overdrevet ;)

Paludans Bog & Cafe Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Paludans Bog & Café is located in the inner city amidst the Latin quarter and the main pedestrian shopping streets. And, appropriately, right opposite to the university main building and the University Library building from 1861 (and still in service for the political science people).

The café serves beer and wine, but the emphasis is on high quality teas and coffee – all acquired from Fair Trade suppliers. So if you are a supporter of the Fair Trade concept, the feel-good factor should kick in here. The menu is limited to soup, buns with (good) cheese or ham and one or two cakes.

The place is fairly large and loaded with books, being, as it is, a hybrid (proper) book store and café. The book store sells both new and used books and was already well established before the café was created in 2001. It is now a tradition, that on Thursdays at 17:00, an author, poet or other literary person comes to the café and recite, chair a debate or something. These sessions are mostly in Danish though.

Paradis Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Could it be? Yes! Paradis is ready to please you.

My favorite is Paradis – and not just because of the name. “Is” is the Danish word for ice cream and Paradis is, well – paradise.

You can get all sorts of flavors and they are made daily in the shop. I recommend strawberry and chocolate – and so does my son, Alfred, in the picture. But they always have something good. The wafers are not home made, but quite good, so try one next time you stop by. You can also have the ice cream in a cup.

You can enjoy your ice cream at the store along with different kinds of coffee and chocolate, but the location is great for taking the ice cream to go. Not too far is Volden – a green area part of the old moat. Wonderful spot to hang out and enjoy a spot of green and some scoops of paradise.

You can find Paradis other places in the city. The first one opened in Sankt Hans Torv and the lines were sooo long. They still can be on a sunny day, but it’s worth the wait!

Perchs The Copenhagen (by Mikkel Skjoldan Svenningsen)

If you like tea, both the regular and the fancy kind, Perchs is your place. A.C Perch has been delivering tea to the Danish people and royal court since 1835. The small shop is absolutely exquisite and old fashioned.

The weight of the tea is measured in old brass scales and the staff knows absolutely everything there is to know about tea. You may purchase over a hundred kinds of tea, both English and Asian of origin. Recently Perchs has established a small tea room on the first floor, with Asian lacquered tables in bright orange – the kind only the royals used to sit at. The tea room holds a piano and several crystal chandeliers, but there is no need to get stressed out. It’s all very relaxed as long as you show the tea some respect.

Tea pots, biscuits and gift bags for tea-loving friends and family at home are all (unfortunately rather expensive) must-haves. A new A. C. Perchs book of tea will be available in English sometime this year. It is written by one of the owners and provides a history of tea from the first Asian plantations to the now nearly 175 year-old shop.

The Rooibos Vanilla and White Crème as well as Green tea with Bamboo are all excellent choices, but of course the best thing about visiting the shop is picking different kinds from the shelves and sniffing your way through until you find what is right exactly for you.

Props Copenhagen (by hern42)

Its easy to spot Props when walking along Blågårdsgade in the heart of Nørrebro. The amount of bicycles parked outside the entrance bear witness to a popular local café. Looking through the large dim lit windows you will see a young relaxed crowd of people sipping hot drinks and beer.

Inside, the café interior is made up of secondhand furniture, vintage posters and paintings on the walls. However, you can never be sure that it will be the same next time you visit as everything in here is up for sale. Even the chair you sit on could potentially be sold whilst you rest your tired little bum-cheeks on it – and you will be asked to move somewhere else. The owner spotted the concept in a bar in Norway in the mid-nineties and brought it back home to Nørrebro.

Props to me represent the very essence of Nørrebro with its mix of people, its charmingly scruffy interior, the relaxed taste in music and a creative, international atmosphere. It is small, cozy, arty, relaxed, fairly cheap and not the least incredibly friendly.

Riccos Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

This wonderful corner coffee shop is a true neighbourhood favorite. And I think I know why!

It’s the combination of a coffee-thirsty neighbourhood, a great location on the corner, really, really good coffee, friendly service, enough seats (about 20 inside) and just the right atmosphere of urban retro cool. Not to forget the fact that they are open from 8 in the morning (hello espresso!) to 22 (goodnight espresso!). This would make a great stop if you are out exploring the more unknown sides of Amager.

And who stops by here? Everybody from young moms on maternity leave with the strollers close to the window to students working on papers, artists needing a break and families (like my own!) on the way home just craving something delicious, hot and sweet.

At Riccos you can not only have great coffee at a very fair price. You can also buy really beautiful porcelain from the talentet Helbak. And if you don’t like coffee you can always try one of the many tasty Anton-beverages. All natural juice. In a bottle. My kids love them. Rasberry is really great!

And as something new you can get soup from the ever so yummi-yummi Soupanatural (check the Soupanatural article) at Riccos!

Behind the name ‘Ricco’ you find Ricco Sørensen who now is the proud owner of 7 coffee shops around Copenhagen. You never go wrong with coffee from Riccos!

Royal Café Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

With its truly unique atmosphere and an original and delicious food concept, Royal Café is one of my favourite places to go for lunch or just a stopover during the day.

It is not your standard cafe concept at all but more of a combination of an ambitious cafe and a factory outlet for some of the best Danish design ware manufacturers. The synthesis works, in my opinion.

On the food side, the offering is re-designed Danish food culture with the emphasis on quality that characterise the place through and through. Royal Café invented what they call… smushies – miniature open sandwiches of a superb quality and obviously a tribute to, and re-interpretation of, the traditional Danish open sandwich. The word smushi is a contraction of the Danish smørrebrød (open faced sandwich) and sushi, by the way.

Royal Café is very much a lunch/shopping-stop-over place but with a Sunday brunch as well. You may want to book a table if planning to visit during the peak lunch and early afternoon hours.

Royal Café describes itself as being “Funky Baroque – design confusion, humorous and chic”. And that is a fair description, actually. Go experience – the café is located in the courtyard behind/between Royal Copenhagen’s and Georg Jensen’s flagship stores on Amagertorv. You can’t see it until you are in the courtyard.

Sort Kaffe og Vinyl Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

I used to live in Vesterbro when I first came to Copenhagen. But that was sadly before Sort Kaffe & Vinyl. This is the kind of local drop by coffee place you will love if you love a good cup of coffee. They open at 08:00, so if you are out and about early this is a great first stop.

The owner, Christian Rygaard, has combined two wonderful things – coffee and vinyl records. The place is quite small and there’s no bathroom, but with black coffee and records like that you will forgive everything! You can sit in the back and read magazines, listen to music and drink coffee.

By the way – the poster from the 2008 Copenhagen Jazz festival was made by Kasper Eistrup from the Danish band Kashmir and depicted no other than Mr. Rygaard of Sort Kaffe & Vinyl.

Did I say they make great coffee??

Soupanatural Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

What better to nourish your soul than with soup? What better to brighten your mood than with cocktails? And what better place to go than Soupanatural in Guldbergsgade? Not only is everything organic – 1 Dkr. out of every soup or cocktail you buy go to charity. And the cocktails are min. 4 cl. alcohol. What’s not to like? I’ll hop on my bike for soup and cocktails like that any night!

Soupanatural offers 4-6 different kinds of soups daily. You can order 250 ml. or 400 ml. with the special of the day costing 30,-/40,- They also have a good selection of cocktails – and you can get everything to go. But the place is really a great place to hang out, so stay in and enjoy the comfort food, cocktails and organic beer. See the selection on the website.

If you are up and about early and want a good start on you day – try the porridge and a smoothie. They open at 08:00 most weekdays.

The location is very typical Nørrebro with a very environmentally way of making business. They don’t just talk about making a greener world – they start with the soup and everything that goes with it. The service is friendly and welcoming and even though the space is quite small the heart behind is big and warm.

Sporvejen Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

If you are claustrophobic, the hyper-intimate Sporvejen will not be your cup of tea. Sporvejen is a bistro, albeit with a very specialized menu, and the interior is skilfully modelled after a tram car 1950 (or something like that), with a dark brown as the predominant colour.

The place is unique and quite an institution and has, since 1974, been serving some of the best burgers in town. If you are planning an informal, intimate dinner for two… romantic or not… the place is great. This goes for a fast business lunch as well. Sporvejen is placed in one of Copenhagen’s sweet spots, at Gråbrødre Torv. This is a central as it gets, basically.

The place is about burgers and they are proud of it. But the kitchen – which is right in the tram car with you – offers omelets and various chicken dishes as well. You can have soft drinks, tea, coffees, beer, wine and even a Lumumba, should you so please.

Prices are very reasonable. A serious quality burger can be had for around DKK 60,00. Definitely different and worth a visit.

Studenterhuset Copenhagen (by Bjarke Bisgaard)

Studenterhuset is a large café mainly targeted towards students, but anyone can drop by.
The place is located very close to Nørreport Station, and is therefore in the very centre of Copenhagen.

There is a very relaxed atmosphere, mainly due to the many soft couches with small tables and magazines.

Which also makes Studenterhuset a really good place to meet up with friends from Copenhagen. They have wireless Internet, so you can make arrangements for your trip while enjoying a cup of coffee.

The Danish bands take the stage during the evenings, the bands vary in style, but most of the time it is acoustic guitar with vocals to set the mood.

Stumbled upon... Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

I stumbled upon this place by the end of a lazy saturday morning drifting along Istedgade, shopping bags in hand and ready for a hot well-brewed coffee.

It doesn’t have a name yet, and the friendly, laid back owners of this daytime coffee-shop, night time bar, do not seem to be in a real hurry to get one either. In fact everything about this place seems like its done in a pace that is just nice and chilled, perfect for more or less hungover days in Vesterbro.

It has a warm feeling to it, letting you know that it’s all about the people who come there and not so much about trying to be anymore than what it is – a “coffee bar”. Leftover wall paper illustrations from the previous Hansen ice cream shop and their own blue zebra artwork gives you the impression that all of it was just always here. Even the two gaming machines Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior fit in perfectly and adds to the feeling of a place that is very “real”…less neat, more Vesterbro.

So tell your friends, and stop by Enghave Plads for your coffee or beer. It’s that little purple place…

Sweet Treat Copenhagen (by Sweet Treat)

Sweet Treat is a lovely little café and shop in Sankt Annæ Gade on Christianshavn. Just around the corner from the canals you will notice it by the garden chars outside on the sidewalk where people usually hang out and enjoy their daily hot coffee or tea.

Inside is nice too, where you cat sit down and relax to some jazz music. It is, however, a very small place and especially in the mornings it gets quite crowded, mainly due to the run of politicians from the Foreign Ministry who start their day with a sweet treat here.

And there are lots of little sweet treats in Sweet Treat, most of them organic too. You will find homemade liquorice, fruit juices, very dark chocolate and French caramels with silly jokes written inside the packaging. At least that’s what they tell you, a non French speaker myself I wouldn’t know – they might be really funny?! They also have a good selection of good teas and coffee.

Tante T Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

If you like tea (and who doesn’t!) you must not miss this spot! Tante T is a nostalgic and cozy tea saloon and shop with no hurry and no stress. The furniture is old and the rooms decorated like a typical Danish grandmother would have done it – all velvety in douche pastel colors. It’s funny and creative and first of all very comfortable. The shop is an old grocery store and the shelves behind the counter are old and charming.

You can order a pot of tea at the spot and bring some home if it delights you. There are over a hundred kinds of tea to buy and various sweet specialties from the Danish kitchen. Tante T offers cookies, brownies, biscuit cake, fruit pie – you name it! All of the cakes are homemade and they alone make a trip to Tante T worth your while. Especially the biscuit cake is mouthwatering. In Denmark, dark bread is very popular so the bread is darker in general. Even most breakfast buns contain several kinds of seeds and corn which go really well with cheese or butter. Try one!

I’ve enjoyed several Saturday and Sunday brunches, with homemade tea buns, Asti, lemon curd and of course tea and other delicacies. The service is really good and the atmosphere is calm, but Tante T is a popular spot. It’s a good idea to order a table if you want to be sure to get a place to sit.

Temple Bar Copenhagen (by Bjarke Bisgaard)

There are so many activities at this place, so this review will mostly be a run through:

Some basic information: The place is located in one of the hip quarters of Copenhagen called Nørrebro, the bar is quite new, and located amongst shawarma stands and ethnic shops.

The bar is owned by an Irishman, which also explains why it is named after a Latin quarter in Dublin.

During the day the place is a cozy café where you can drink your coffee and have one of their many sandwiches and wraps.

It is decorated with contemporary art, which is replaced regularly, which gives the place a very lively character.

Besides the decorations, the bar also has a very casual look, with old couches and big chairs for relaxing.

On the upper floor there are pin-ball machines, pool and of course : Fussball.

2 Wednesday nights a month is Quiz Nights, which is jolly good ole family friendly fun with a prize for the winner, and a good time for everyone.

There is also Stand-up on Wednesday nights, but its in danish, so would probably be a confusing experience for people coming from other countries.

Another activity is Café Scientifique, which is a intellectual forum where anyone can join in, the concept hails from Paris, but now thrives in many places in Europe, it is not placed on a specific night, so an idea would be to ask the employees when the next meeting is, oh and its free.

Final information : the bar is divided into a smoking and a non-smoking section, so everyone is welcome :)

The à la menthe Copenhagen (by Tue Rasmussen)

As you might know, The à la menthe means “Tea with mint”, which is the specialty of this little spot.

This place shares a certain quality with many of the other spots in Copenhagen, seeing that it is from a completely different culture.

Then one might ask “Then why are you reviewing it? Aren’t these reviews supposed to show the unique culture of Copenhagen?”, the answer lies in the very nature of Copenhagen city life.

Because Copenhagen is by definition a place of multicultural activities, from the lovely Italian pizza places in Frederiksberg to the many entertaining street performers on the main street, and all the way back to this little tea parlor.

Its a very small shop with only one floor, a couple of tables, and some nice soft couches with colorful pillows of the Moroccan design.

This place serves as a refuge for the many people rushing to work, and down the long halls of shopping centers located nearby.

And there is nothing better than going down to the little shop with a friend, and relax with a cup of tea, after a stressful day.

If you really need to relax and give in to your taste buds, i suggest you take the Mint tea with plenty of honey, its filled with Mint leaves, so its quite fun to look at as well.

It also gave me the inspiration to make my very own tea :P

The Laundromat Café Copenhagen (by Laundromat)

If you are traveling for a longer period of time and need to get your dirty clothes washed, then there is no better place to do so than at Laundromat Café in Elmegade. With the wireless Internet you can even check your emails whilst smelly socks take care of themselves in one of the four shiny red launderettes in the back.

Whilst waiting for your laundry, or if you just happened to pop by the café to enjoy a good strong cappuccino, you can enjoy a good selection of magazines and newspapers or read one of their 4000 books, all of which are stylishly lined up in the bar according to colour. Lounge on the red leather diner style benches and have a look at the wall boxes decorated by young local artists or designers.

Wallpaper a few years ago labeled the place “the worlds hippest launderette” and without having visited all the launderettes in the world so far I would have to agree. The general crowd here is the young urbanites, designers, creatives, and students. Hip and arty. A flashy Mac laptop is more common here than not.

Only downside to the place is the prices, which are, well… quite hip! Laundromat is probably the most expensive place to enjoy your coffee in Nørrebro. Saying that the homemade food and the overall superior quality make me come back to enjoy the cozy atmosphere. Besides, not many cafés in Copenhagen are open this early, 08:00, so often it becomes my morning hang out before a long day of work.

The Living Room Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

The Living Room has a split personality – with an ecological conscience. The place is in two floors with upstairs being a nice and busy coffee/tea bar (with a good view of the busy outside), and downstairs coming across as an almost cave-like retro lounge. The lounge has an open fire and is literally crammed with all sorts of furniture, including chaise longs and your grandparent’s old leather chairs and coffee tables. Dark, intimate and very cosy. Sometimes there is live (DJ) music.

The Living Room source excellent coffee and are serious about ecology and Fair Trade. You will find a wide selection of coffees and teas along with various café food (cakes, paninis and so on). Most of it with an ecological pedigree.

The Living Room is located in Larsbjørnsstræde – notoriously famous for once being one of Copenhagens darkest neighbourhoods full of hookers and hoodlums. But this has changed and the whole area surrounding, the Latin Quarter, is one of Copenhagen’s most dynamic and off mainstream places to be.

Until recently, The Living Room was known as Robert’s Coffee and part of the franchise chain so named. The owners, however, decided to leave the franchise and relaunched as The Living Room with a similar concept.

The Royal Danish Playhouse Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

It is one of those waterfront spots. The Royal Danish Play House is the newly inaugurated (2008) play scene of the Royal Danish Theatre and is located beautifully on the waterfront – just opposite the also fairly new opera.

Apart from the theatre itself, there is a restaurant, a cocktail bar and the café – all of them open for all including non theater goers.

If you want to dine somewhere out of the ordinary, I recommend the restaurant. Named after Ofelia, Hamlet’s lass, the restaurant is set in this huge, yet strangely intimate, industrial room with nothing but space, sky and the water. And white linen tablecloths. Definetely. The kitchen matches the unique setting with excellent offerings for brunch, lunch and dinner.

The café serves good quality without being cosmic about it. Light meals, fine teas, quality beer and of course coffee variants to your heart’s content.

And then there is the cocktail bar, in this perfect setting, which is quite serious about its cocktails and will serve you classics as well as some unique house cocktails. Opens at 18:30.

The place has free wireless Internet (indoors – possibly reachable outside – didn’t check). I recommend the website with more details, i.e. wine, actual menus and so on.

Tranquebar Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

This shop is well hidden and that’s probably why it’s so peaceful. It’s quite big and painted black, with large windows and endless shelves holding explosions of colors. Tranquebar is a shop for the traveler.

The shop contains books on a variety of subjects but especially travelling, photography, anthropology and the cultures of the world are represented in this beautiful and inspirational boutique.

Besides books you can buy handmade toys in natural materials, Pashmina scarves, music from all over the world, jewelry, pictures and posters and a great cup of coffee! You can sit in one of the big couches (many pillows and no color coordination) and enjoy coffee, beers and snacks. The china is British and mismatched. Of course everything is fair trade and ecological. Try a chocolate scone with your cappuccino.

Tranquebar is a great shop to visit whether you are travelling and you want to learn more about Copenhagen or you need inspiration for where to go next. This place just seems to grow endlessly. Not physically but in my mind. It keeps getting better. I often go there just to feel my own presence in the middle of the colorful world song where all cultures and therefore no cultures are represented. In a shop that celebrates the world and all of her inhabitants there are no prejudices. Here you can be and be yourself.

Verde Food & Coffee Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

Verde Food and Coffee serves the best organic coffee in town by far! The nice people there prepares it for you with a warm smile and always have time for a little anecdote or a chat about the days news.

Apart from the coffee and deli, another addition to Verde Food & Coffee is jeans! As goes for everything else in the shop the jeans are organic and fair trade. The brand Kuyichi is Dutch and has taken its name from the Peruvian God of the Rainbow. Sounds quite hippie – which it may well be, but really it is quite hip too.

So is this place, which also provides free Internet so you can check your email whilst resting comfortably on top of the chunky tree trunks which make up the chairs. The funky interior is lit up by custom made woolen lamps and makes for a cozy atmosphere any day.

By the way, new fresh and amazing juices have been added to the menu and more seats have been installed in a cosy lounge area in the back – another good excuse to go and hang out!

Verdens Mindste Kaffebar Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Of course this is somewhat a gimmick – but it is also rather cool. The world’s smallest coffee shop. That is what the name says, and they have one single table to show for it. Plus a couple outside on the sidewalk. But apart from the fact that somewhere in the world there must surely be an even smaller coffee shop the place is very charming.

It is like entering into a micro-cosmos or a doll’s house, and everybody tend to keep their voices down. But the coffee is fresh and if you get to sit at the table, the whole setup works very well. They do take-away too, which is nice, given the general notion.

Another thing about Verdens Mindste Kaffebar, is, that it is located in one of the interesting quarters outside Copenhagen center, approximately 15 minutes walk from Rådhuspladsen. Especially one short street nearby, called Værnedamsvej, has some interesting offerings. Værnedamsvej is one of the arteries connecting the Frederiksberg and Vesterbro areas and is worth a visit if you want to venture off the city center.

Verdens Mindste Kaffebar has tea and often a cake, in addition to the very good coffee. And for some reason you can buy things sun glasses, little toys and sweets too.

Vinylbar Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnlogsson)

This cosy spot at Sortedamssøen has it all. Great coffee of all kinds. Check! Extensive menue. Check! Nice view of the lake. Check! Vinyl records in the cieling of the restroom. Check! The last part is almost my favorite thing about the place – but all of the decor has that very retro/low key feel that makes you feel welcome and at home. Oh – and if you have a dog, it’s allowed to go inside as well.

Vinylbar is great for brunch as it offers a large buffet. Order a warm drink and get cosy inside. Or watch the eager runners sprint by, the new moms with their strollers, old people with dogs and just life in general. Be careful when stepping outside – you have to cross a cycle path. You can also stay for dinner and in the evening there’s cocktails and music.

This is one of those all through the day kind of places to hang out and enjoy the city.
