Bang & Jensen Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

At Bang & Jensen you can get it all. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and all kinds of beer, coffee and cocktails. You could almost live here all day – and it would be quite a nice day, too. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are ample.

The places opened back in 1997 and was one of the first cafes in the street – if not the first. Now the area is full of great little places, but this is the place to go! A lot of the young people in Vesterbro uses the place as a mix of study hall, meeting point and living room. That makes the place feel like home.

The service is friendly and the place is usually quite packed. They also have free wireless Internet, so bring your laptop along.

Bang & Jensen is a great place to check out the current street style of Copenhagen. Just get a place by the window or look at the other guests. Style everywhere!

By the way – the kitchen closes at 19:30 on Saturdays to make room for cocktails.

Bolsjefabrikken Copenhagen (by Jeppe Krarup)

Bolsjefabrikken is largely the reason why i wanted to write reviews about Copenhagen, because this has got to be on of the coolest spots in Copenhagen.

There are many like it all through Europe, but this one is ours.

Its the most fun in the summertime, because you can chill on the rooftops and play outside, but it is quite beautiful when its covered in snow in the wintertime as well.

The place used to be a Rumballfactory, (which is what Bolsjefabrikken means, though some people call it “The Candy Factory as well), then after it was shut down, the story goes that a rich man bought the ground and gave it to the young people, and then went into a coma, so they have it indefinitely now, but i’m not entirely sure if its just a tall tale, but its a fun story anyway :P

The factory is quite big, with both a large hall and a 2 story building, all of them filled with couches, bars and various art projects.

The art projects are the biggest thing at Fabrikken at the moment, seeing that they have workshops a couple of times a month, where people can experiment with different kinds of materials to create something to decorate the place.

They also have some projects for the crafty people with technical know-how, which includes making a kitchen and building bridges between rooftops, stuff that normally would be hard and boring, but the people at the factory makes it fun.

The many rooms are often used by different political parties for their monthly gatherings, and many other social organisations, so there’s always somebody at the factory.

They also have parties with musical performances and other kinds of entertainment, so when you’re in Copenhagen you should definitely check if there’s something going down at the factory.

And say hi from Tue :)

Café Bartof Copenhagen (by Bjarke Bisgaard)

Café Bartof has been described as the coziest music venue in all of Copenhagen, which is easy to imagine when you see the place.

As a bar it has a respectable size, but there’s not exactly room for a big band orchestra.

But that’s a part of the Bartof charm, there’s so little space, that the performers and the audience automatically create an intimate atmosphere that cannot be topped anywhere else.

Bartof also has a wide selection of different artists playing, such genres as : hillbilly countryblues, super bozza/pop and Irish folk/world, might give you a hint of the musical sprit of Bartof.

If you happen to show up on of the nights Bartof isn’t filled with jazzy delight or upbeat folk music, then you’ll experience a bar that quite simply is very cozy.

The word “cozy” is the closest thing we can get to the danish word “hygge”, which is something most danish people take much pride in.

“Hygge” is to relax with your friends, maybe chatting, maybe just enjoying each others company, maybe at home or maybe somewhere else, and that is the essence of the Danish spirit and the Bartof spirit as well.

Seeing that it is located on Frederiksberg, its a bit more pricey than other bars, but what the heck, you get what you pay for ;)

This café is almost a little secret, but I want as many people as possible to know about it.

The outside is not doing the very, very cosy inside justice – and I really think this is one of the most cosy, or “hyggelige” as we say, Danish cafés in Copenhagen. Café Retro is the perfect place to go after a long cold walk when you need to get warm, have a nice cup of coffee and just feel good.

And what makes you feel so good at Café Retro? Not just the great coffee and comfy sofas. But also the very kind and friendly service. And guess what – the bartenders are voluntary workers and all profits go to Africa and India! That is just so great!

The menu is limited to soup and snacks, but they have lots of coffee, beer and wine, so you’ll be just fine.

The café is dedicated to live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. But they also support a wide range of other cultural events. Keep up to date with current events on the website.

Cinemateket Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

Cinemateket is the only one of its kind in Copenhagen. This movie theatre doesn’t show the blockbusters running in regular theaters. Instead Cinemateket offers a wide selection of film classics, cult cinema, documentaries, short films and projects from the Danish Film School. Each month has its own theme and different genres are represented in the program during that month. So if you have a secret passion for German silent films, you might as well go and see one while you’re in Cph.

I saw “Dr. Mabuse” (Fritz Lang) in Cinemateket with a live pianist and the same old man who’s been to every film I’ve ever seen in that cinema! That’s what I call true atmosphere!

The last Friday of every month there’s a Friday Late Night arrangement. The theme is always music. The night begins with a film (about music) and afterwards the bar is open and a DJ starts the party. I recently saw the Tom Waits classic “Big Time”, so that serves an example of what kind of music movie we are talking about. In the basement there’s a Videotek where you can watch all kinds of movies made in Denmark over the years.

A good piece of advice is to buy and bring your own candy, because Cinemateket has a very narrow selection of edible goods to bring inside the theater. But maybe it is for the best not to be too tempted by enormous amounts of buttered popcorn. If you are starving after the film, Cinemateket holds a fancy restaurant called Sult (Hunger) and I have heard nice things about the place, but I have never eaten there myself since it is kind of pricey.

CMYK kld Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

The beautifully decorated little shop CMYK kld in Jægersborggade is quite a curiosity. Within 30 m2 only the owner has put together nothing less than a print factory, a bookshop, an artist/designer shopping mall, an animation box, a drawing/print desk, a poster tube, a card house and a gallery. The best way to introduce yourself to the place is if you visit on the first Thursday of each month, where the entire street is open till late for their “Late Night Hunting” event. For this CMYK has invented a concept called “7 o’clock Performer” where various bands and/or artists perform live in the tiny window sill of the shop. In addition to the often quite quirky performances beers are only 10 kr., so its definitely something not to be missed!

1. The Print Factory
…was the first invention when the shop opened in 2006. Here you can choose one of the many A4 sized artworks by named artists and illustrators, have it printed and framed to take with you for only 85 kr. Part of the fun is the steps you have to go through to buy it which is like a little performance in its own right. Go see for yourself.

2. The Book Shelve
… is an artwork in itself assembled from various wooden chairs cut up and put back together to form a beautiful book shelve painted silver grey as everything else in the shop. On the shelves you will find zines, magazines, art books, cartoons and catalogues by independent publishers or individuals, all focused on visuals.

3. The Shopping Mall
… consist of 30 square boxes on a wall each representing a shop “owned” by an artist or designer. The selected artists/designers can display anything they want to, which have resulted in some fine miniature exhibitions. All the objects are of course for sale.

4. The Art Gallery
… consist of three walls representing the contrary to the print factory with original artworks by changing groups of artists, cartoonists or the like. Changing exhibitions every 2-3 months.

5. The Drawing/Print Desk
…a desk with piles of drawings and original prints with works ranging between 350-1000 kr.

6. The Poster Tube
…little “trees” of tubes with A3 posters from 200 kr.

7. The Card House
…postcards by various artists, including some made by the owner who is originally a graphic designer herself.

8. Animation Minute
…a box you can peak into and watch short animation films. The films change once a month with each “7 o’clock Performer” night.

It is a very charming little place full of surprises and creativity. Make sure you don’t miss it!

You can also join their group on Facebook for regular news on events, concerts, etc.

Copenhagen Jazzhouse Copenhagen (by Mikkel Skjoldan Svenningsen )

Copenhagen Jazzhouse is more than one thing. First of all it is, as you might have guessed, a jazz house. There are concerts almost every day. Mostly jazz, but also tango, soft rock and other genres are represented. Especially the tango concerts are fabulous, because people actually hit the floor and dance the tango. Both young and old, practiced and less practiced. Not just on the dance floor but in front of the bar and between the tables, people swing around like true tango alley cats.

Very different kinds of people come at the jazz house and the atmosphere is most often positive. People who come to the concerts are usually true lovers of music and it’s always easy to talk the ears off someone who shares your passion for some strange genre.

After the concerts, Copenhagen Jazzhouse turns into a swinging nightclub. Latin, acidjazz, soul, house and the likes of it is played and people of all ages come to sway their hips and flirt with each other. The bar serves good cocktails (definitely a decent cosmopolitan), excellent Danish beers and delicious wine. If you are not much into dancing, you can sit on the ground floor, where the music is not too loud. The ground floor has a bar of its own and conversations are easily made.

The nightclub opens after the concert and it is nice not having to bother with where on earth you are going to go afterwards. During winter and temperatures well below zero degrees Celsius, pub crawling can be less enjoyable. Therefore, you might as well enjoy a full evening in the Jazz House.

Din Nye Ven Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Din Nye Ven is directly translated Your New Friend. And this place is. The place is decorated in a very retro style with different chairs and camping tables which gives the place it’s quirky charm. The guests are mostly young people and very laid back and friendly. You can choose from different kinds of beer along with coffee and cold drinks. They even have their own beer called Din Nye Øl (Your new beer – but you might have guessed). According to fellow Spotter, Mette Walsted, it is very tasty and nice – and at a price of only 20 kr. a bottle, you can strech your budget and still have a night out!

Located in the very charming Latin quarter and with a monthly programme of great acts, DJ’s and art shows this is a great meeting point as well as the place to go for a night on the town. They even sometimes arrange ping-pong tournaments. Please check Din Nye Vens Myspace for special events and updates.

Folkets Hus Copenhagen (by Bjarke Bisgaard)

Folkets hus (meaning “House for the people”), is a house dedicated to all people, and have been the joy of the neighbourhood for about 25 years now. It is more or less managed by the people going there, and anyone can join in.

There is so much stuff to do in Folkets hus, and I don’t have time to mention them all, but here’s some:

Folkets Hus spillefolk: Musicians arrange the “Ramslag” with music and dancing 2 Fridays a month.

Folkets Hus Choir called Ørevox (meaning “Earwax”) sings each Monday night.

Arabian dancing and folkekøkken (same thing in Germany : Vokü, Volksküche), where volunteers serve ecological meals every sunday evening.

Entry to all events are free, and most food and coffee, you can decide yourself how much you want to pay.

The volunteers at the house are also the arrangers of “The Peacewatch” standing at Christiansborg (Cityhall), most days of the year, in protest of the Iraqi & Afghan wars.

There’s also a forum dedicated to the people interested in philosophy, they agree on a book, and then they discuss, it is held on no specific night, so ask in the café Under Konstruktion.

Café Under Konstruktion, meaning “Under Construction”, which is a wordplay, because the café is always under construction, always evolving into something more.

The Café aims to cast focus on the consumerism and conformity of the common café culture, therefore everybody who works there are volunteers, and they arrange very cheap vegan food, and most of the profit goes to political projects and the maintenance of the café of course.

Folkets hus is truly a house for the people, i hope you will enjoy it as much as i have ;)

LiteraturHaus Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

Beat poetry, Russian propaganda posters, Cuban short films, stand-up opera, French avant-garde, Palestinian sounds, free-jazz performances, Flamenco, spoken word, written words, poetry slam, literary debates, words, words, words… They come to life in an old refurbished Methodist church in Møllegade dating back 1892. A quirky house of literature, Literaturhaus is the first place in Denmark solely dedicated to… well, words.

The idea comes from Germany where so-called “literature houses” are more common, brought to Copenhagen by Paul Opstrup the initiator of LiteraturHaus and run by volunteers. A hub for authors, critics, literates, students and anyone with a love for words Literaturhaus always attracts a variety of people young and old.

The building in itself is also interesting. The raw looking physical space with its high ceiled, sparsely refurbished church room and the intimate living room style café in the basement makes Literaturhaus a suited venue for performances of all kinds. At times somewhat avant-garde for my taste, however you will be guaranteed a new experience and plenty of food for thought.

Apart from having your soul and mind feed,

the cosy café downstairs offers homemade organic meals and drinks every Thursday evening – often there is a vegetarian special as well. Both events and meals are very budget friendly; a meal is generally at 35-40 kr.

Loppen Copenhagen (by Bjarke Bisgaard)

Loppen is yet another fantastic place for musical adventures. It it has existed for about 35 years, and during that period of time, just about every kind of music has been performed.

Though originally called The Viking Jazz Club of Christiana, there have been both electro, punk metal, soul, funk, folk and jazz of course, often the music is quite “dance-friendly”.

Even though this review is specifically about Loppen, I just have to say a couple of words about the location: Christiania.

Christiania serves as a sanctuary for anyone who is tired of the consumerism and routine of everyday life, with its many activities, shops, music venues, restaurants, parties and social gatherings, it is the true center of Copenhagen.

During the summer there are many parties and mini festivals, with music and just about any other kind of entertainment, and during December there is the annual Christmas sale in Grå Hal (The Grey Hall) which showcases just about everything Christiania has to offer.

Back to Loppen: Which means “Flea” by the way, which is the official logo for Loppen, as you can see on the picture.

Loppen is used for many kinds of events, because, with its white chalky walls, wooden floors, wooden pillars and small wooden tables it creates a very intimate atmosphere, which is accommodated by friendly employees and visitors in general.

I advise you to check out their web-page, or ask a local if they know whose playing at Loppen while you’re in town, and I suggest you go see it no matter what is playing ;)

Månefiskeren Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

It almost seems ridiculous to recommend more spots at Christiania. You might as well go there and see it all, but that wouldn’t make much of a blog, would it?

Månefiskeren is one of my favorite places. Not because the menu holds anything too special or alluring in any way, actually the whole thing is mediocre at best, but because it’s probably the best hangout spot in the entire city. The atmosphere is amazing in summertime outside Månefiskeren, where people eat food, drink cold beers and listen to the DJ, who’s always turning records. You have to be patient if you want to eat something at Månefiskeren – mostly because the staff seems to be stoned all the time and most likely will forget your order entirely.

Luckily you can bring your own food or beverages (no alcohol is served). There is no fancy brunch or anything that resembles it, but if you come at the right time (early!) Månefiskeren will be quiet and you should enjoy a truly Danish breakfast – coffee and white bread with cheese and cucumber, or oatmeal with milk and sugar. During wintertime it is really nice to sit inside with a bun just out of the oven, and a steaming glass of tea.

You can also find Internet and a pool table. Sometimes you may stumble upon a concert at night, but the true bliss lies in the hot summer chill-out with all your friends and half of Copenhagen.

Overdrevet Copenhagen (by Tue Rasmussen)

Overdrevet (meaning “Exaggeration” as a reference to the Punk lifestyle) is the name of Det Nye Ungdomshus. The new name refers to the much loved Jagtvej 69 Youthhouse, which was torn down some time ago.

Overdrevet has tried to recreate the mood and activities of the old youth-house, and succeeded, it won’t ever be the same as Jagtvej69 which was loved by the alternative movement all over Europe, but its a start.

The place is more or less dedicated to the “Young Punk” movement, meaning hard rocking music, drinking & Living, the fact that their bar is called “The Deathmachine” serves as a hint.

But there’s much more to the youth-house than that, and the people going there are very open-minded toward all kinds of people, completely blind to appearance or music taste.

When the place opened, they were very keen on letting everyone see the place, so during the morning and afternoon, the parents, grandparents and children came to see the new place, while listening to jazzy easy listening music and watching galleries with the history of Jagtvej 69.

During the evening the young people took over the place with many types of music, punk & hip-hop included of course.

A perfect example to describe the agenda of the new youth-house, is the monthly hiphop gathering with the motto : “We’re anti-commercialist, anti-profit, anti-sexist, anti-racist, anti-drugs & Anti-Anti”, and as you might have suspected the people coming to this place, are on the far far left on the political scale, but as said, anyone is welcome.

There is also a very nice café upstairs for reading books, the books are of free use, most are in danish, but it should be possible to find something in English, German or french as well, only open during the day though.

It’s wicked, punk and exciting, see you at Overdrevet ;)

Rust Copenhagen (by Bjarke Bisgaard)

Rust is a place dedicated to young, danish people, mostly students and a lot of musicians. The bands are mostly Danish underground hard rock groups, consisting of young students.

But even though the bands aren’t famous yet, it is still a lot of fun to see them rocking out on stage, and a great way to get to know some new music

And seeing that most of the bands aren’t famous, a lot of the people at the concerts are friends and family who got in for free (even though it is quite cheap to get in), so if you chat up with some different people, you might get to meet a band member from one of the groups you like ;)

The place itself is quite big, and divided into 2 floors : The upper floor is where the bands perform, and where the long bar going across the room is located, The bottom floor has toilets, wardrobe and stuff like that, but also “The basement” bar, which is a really cool bar with mostly electronic music, and with the styling of a discotheque.

So if you’re in the mood for some Danish hard rock, or getting some hard pumping bass into your system, go to RUST.

Another plus is that it is located in a really cool area, with both theater, bars and generally a great nightlife.

Sort Kaffe og Vinyl Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

I used to live in Vesterbro when I first came to Copenhagen. But that was sadly before Sort Kaffe & Vinyl. This is the kind of local drop by coffee place you will love if you love a good cup of coffee. They open at 08:00, so if you are out and about early this is a great first stop.

The owner, Christian Rygaard, has combined two wonderful things – coffee and vinyl records. The place is quite small and there’s no bathroom, but with black coffee and records like that you will forgive everything! You can sit in the back and read magazines, listen to music and drink coffee.

By the way – the poster from the 2008 Copenhagen Jazz festival was made by Kasper Eistrup from the Danish band Kashmir and depicted no other than Mr. Rygaard of Sort Kaffe & Vinyl.

Studenterhuset is a large café mainly targeted towards students, but anyone can drop by.
The place is located very close to Nørreport Station, and is therefore in the very centre of Copenhagen.

There is a very relaxed atmosphere, mainly due to the many soft couches with small tables and magazines.

Which also makes Studenterhuset a really good place to meet up with friends from Copenhagen. They have wireless Internet, so you can make arrangements for your trip while enjoying a cup of coffee.

The Danish bands take the stage during the evenings, the bands vary in style, but most of the time it is acoustic guitar with vocals to set the mood.

Stumbled upon... Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

I stumbled upon this place by the end of a lazy saturday morning drifting along Istedgade, shopping bags in hand and ready for a hot well-brewed coffee.

It doesn’t have a name yet, and the friendly, laid back owners of this daytime coffee-shop, night time bar, do not seem to be in a real hurry to get one either. In fact everything about this place seems like its done in a pace that is just nice and chilled, perfect for more or less hungover days in Vesterbro.

It has a warm feeling to it, letting you know that it’s all about the people who come there and not so much about trying to be anymore than what it is – a “coffee bar”. Leftover wall paper illustrations from the previous Hansen ice cream shop and their own blue zebra artwork gives you the impression that all of it was just always here. Even the two gaming machines Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior fit in perfectly and adds to the feeling of a place that is very “real”…less neat, more Vesterbro.

So tell your friends, and stop by Enghave Plads for your coffee or beer. It’s that little purple place…

Tante T Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

If you like tea (and who doesn’t!) you must not miss this spot! Tante T is a nostalgic and cozy tea saloon and shop with no hurry and no stress. The furniture is old and the rooms decorated like a typical Danish grandmother would have done it – all velvety in douche pastel colors. It’s funny and creative and first of all very comfortable. The shop is an old grocery store and the shelves behind the counter are old and charming.

You can order a pot of tea at the spot and bring some home if it delights you. There are over a hundred kinds of tea to buy and various sweet specialties from the Danish kitchen. Tante T offers cookies, brownies, biscuit cake, fruit pie – you name it! All of the cakes are homemade and they alone make a trip to Tante T worth your while. Especially the biscuit cake is mouthwatering. In Denmark, dark bread is very popular so the bread is darker in general. Even most breakfast buns contain several kinds of seeds and corn which go really well with cheese or butter. Try one!

I’ve enjoyed several Saturday and Sunday brunches, with homemade tea buns, Asti, lemon curd and of course tea and other delicacies. The service is really good and the atmosphere is calm, but Tante T is a popular spot. It’s a good idea to order a table if you want to be sure to get a place to sit.

The Living Room Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

The Living Room has a split personality – with an ecological conscience. The place is in two floors with upstairs being a nice and busy coffee/tea bar (with a good view of the busy outside), and downstairs coming across as an almost cave-like retro lounge. The lounge has an open fire and is literally crammed with all sorts of furniture, including chaise longs and your grandparent’s old leather chairs and coffee tables. Dark, intimate and very cosy. Sometimes there is live (DJ) music.

The Living Room source excellent coffee and are serious about ecology and Fair Trade. You will find a wide selection of coffees and teas along with various café food (cakes, paninis and so on). Most of it with an ecological pedigree.

The Living Room is located in Larsbjørnsstræde – notoriously famous for once being one of Copenhagens darkest neighbourhoods full of hookers and hoodlums. But this has changed and the whole area surrounding, the Latin Quarter, is one of Copenhagen’s most dynamic and off mainstream places to be.

Until recently, The Living Room was known as Robert’s Coffee and part of the franchise chain so named. The owners, however, decided to leave the franchise and relaunched as The Living Room with a similar concept.

Of course this is somewhat a gimmick – but it is also rather cool. The world’s smallest coffee shop. That is what the name says, and they have one single table to show for it. Plus a couple outside on the sidewalk. But apart from the fact that somewhere in the world there must surely be an even smaller coffee shop the place is very charming.

It is like entering into a micro-cosmos or a doll’s house, and everybody tend to keep their voices down. But the coffee is fresh and if you get to sit at the table, the whole setup works very well. They do take-away too, which is nice, given the general notion.

Another thing about Verdens Mindste Kaffebar, is, that it is located in one of the interesting quarters outside Copenhagen center, approximately 15 minutes walk from Rådhuspladsen. Especially one short street nearby, called Værnedamsvej, has some interesting offerings. Værnedamsvej is one of the arteries connecting the Frederiksberg and Vesterbro areas and is worth a visit if you want to venture off the city center.

Verdens Mindste Kaffebar has tea and often a cake, in addition to the very good coffee. And for some reason you can buy things sun glasses, little toys and sweets too.
