Aamann's Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Despite its size with only three or four tables, Aamann’s stands tall amongst Danish innovative restaurants with “new school” kitchens. Aamann’s has taken the smorgasbord to new heights with an uncompromising philosophy to provide the highest quality possible – at a reasonable price.

You will need a reservation if you want to try Aamann’s open faced sandwiches – which is a traditional Danish preparation. There is soup to die for as well – and cakes. The menu is seasonal and changes every two months or so and everything is either home made or bought off ecological suppliers and prepared with great love. This kitchen is both rare and world class. Nothing less. So, if you are into food…

In addition to the restaurant, Aamann’s offers both take-away of selected dishes and various goods of a quality to match the rest of the setup.

Atlas Bar Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

Atlas is known as the mythical figure that carries the world on his shoulders. Atlas Bar has a similar concept, with food from all over the world. The Bar is located on the corner opposite from the Livingroom (see the Livingroom article), in one of the liveliest neighborhoods in Copenhagen.

Atlas Bar is homey and international at the same time, with maps on the tables and the daily menu written on a blackboard on the wall. The restaurant is in the basement and somehow a bit excluded from the world, which makes it even cozier. The menu is variable, but mostly exotic food is on the board.

Even though the food is mostly exotic, Atlas Bar always manages to squeeze the best Danish vegetables into their dishes. Atlas Bar is a great place for vegetarians, with a big selection of tasty veggie goods. If you don’t have a problem with devouring other species, try anything with seafood, it is amazing here. Also the homemade fruit and vegetable juice is worth the contents of your wallet and has lately become something close to famous.

If you happen to be really tired of ordering too expensive food in restaurants and getting two tablespoons of something on your plate, Atlas Bar is your place. The prizes are ok and the amounts of food enormous. Unfortunately you will sometimes have to wait a very long time for your food, but the tuna steak is worth it!

Bang & Jensen Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

At Bang & Jensen you can get it all. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and all kinds of beer, coffee and cocktails. You could almost live here all day – and it would be quite a nice day, too. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are ample.

The places opened back in 1997 and was one of the first cafes in the street – if not the first. Now the area is full of great little places, but this is the place to go! A lot of the young people in Vesterbro uses the place as a mix of study hall, meeting point and living room. That makes the place feel like home.

The service is friendly and the place is usually quite packed. They also have free wireless Internet, so bring your laptop along.

Bang & Jensen is a great place to check out the current street style of Copenhagen. Just get a place by the window or look at the other guests. Style everywhere!

By the way – the kitchen closes at 19:30 on Saturdays to make room for cocktails.

Café Hacienda Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Cafe Hacienda is located in one of Copenhagen’s central parks - H.C. Ørstedsparken just outside the inner city. Green lawns, a pond and two playgrounds. One of them right next to Cafe Hacienda.

So if you are are travelling with children and need to get away from the hustle and bustle, this might be a place to go. And if you are not travelling with children and need to get away from the hustle and bustle, well… this might be a place to go too.

The kitchen was seriously updated this year by the new owner and offers salads, various sandwiches including some very nice grilled variants, a quality burger, humus, tomato soup with pesto, smoked salmon and before 13:00 each day, a full brunch menu.

Café Norden Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

If there is such a thing as the Copenhagen mainstay café, it must be Café Norden. Very mainstream, very well located (at Amagertorv on the section between the main pedestrian streets Strøget and Købmagergade) and very big.

The café occupies two floors and has an almost industrial quality to it. But despite the scale, the place has a nice atmosphere with the heavy inspiration of a Jugend style Wienna café anno 1895. Complete with specially designed opal lamps on the walls. The ground floor is often busy and can be somewhat crowded and cramped at times, whilst the spacious upper floor has a calmer setting with larger tables, a high ceiling and red leather couches for the lucky ones. The window seats offer an interesting view of Copenhagen’s central hustle-and-bustle shopping havoc.

The offering is of the well assorted café with all sorts of coffee, tea and other hot drinks and also beers and soft drinks. Along with different (good) cakes, ice cream and so on. The kitchen is what you might call “heavy café” and offers both light food and snacks as well as more substantial meals, including a very talented tomato soup, full-meal burgers, lasagna and a quality pasta dish. In fact, everything is quality.

Prices reflect this and are fairly high – at least when it comes to food. The place can be a little hectic at times and you may have to be patient to cope. But generally the café is well staffed and things flow well.

Café Norden has outdoor serving all seasons, weather permitting and does not accept reservations for tables.

Café Spisebilletten Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

The café has a warm and friendly atmosphere and is definitely worth considering if you want a moment’s peace and quiet in the course of a shopping or sightseeing marathon. The combination of a downplayed tasteful interior and quality products is just appealing, in my opinion, and the original art on the walls just adds to this. Spisebilletten has that no-nonsense quality that I appreciate very much.

The kitchen is mainstream café and servings are made on the fly. You can choose from salads and sandwiches and a soup of the week and in addition to a broad selection of coffees and (high quality) teas you can have beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks.

There is a breakfast offer until 12:00 and between 12:00 – 14:00, brunch. Prices are average.

Den Franske Café Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Let it be said right away: I like this place best in the summer. As a café, it is very nice with a tasteful interior and the kitchen and bar are capable of providing a good mainstream product. And this, of course, goes both winter and summer. But in the summertime, its location on the lakeside of one of Copenhagens large, artificial lakes, makes it a gem.

Den Franske Cafe is located on the dividing line between inner Copenhagen and the residential areas of Østerbro. And therefore lends itself perfectly to being a waypoint on a walk along or around one or more of those lakes. Then you can sit and rest outside, under the trees and watch the swans, or people on an evening stroll as you drink your café au lait. Not at all bad.

The menu offering is actually quite broad with typical café/bistro dishes and a breakfast or brunch menu all mornings. And there is a bar capable of beers, wines and even a couple of different cocktails.

Prices are fair to average.

Copenhagen’s best vegetarian and organic meals are served at Den Grønne Kælder located in the heart of the city center. The setup is easy:

1. Ask yourself exactly how hungry you are.

2. Define the number and combination of hot dishes and salads you think you can manage.

3. Then choose (if you can) from the mouthwatering banquet of meals on the menu.

It always takes me years to choose, it all just sounds so good – and it is! The hot dishes range from portobello mushrooms over spinach lasagna to potato and tofu stew. The salads are equally lip smacking, I recommend the beet root or the cabbage and apple as winners.

On a general note the chef is not shy in her use of cream, cheese and oil in the foods, meaning that you will never leave Den Grønne Kælder hungry or unsatisfied.

And don’t forget to treat yourself to the delicious homespun hummus as well (comes with some combinations of dishes) – it rocks!

My best recommendations to this place – and it’s cheap too!

Grønsagen Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

Grønsagen is one of my favorite places at Christiania. It’s a greengrocer’s shop and restaurant/café combined! It’s very (very!) small and filled with baskets with vegetables and fruit. You can buy all sorts of organic goods: juice, nuts, snacks and food. At the counter you find various salads, veggie lasagna and bread. Especially the salads are very tasty and creative with nuts, beetroot, pasta, eggplant, and all of your favorite traditional or nontraditional vegetables. The food is prized per weight. It’s a bit expensive, but nutritious and delicious!

In the middle of the room are a couple of tables and chairs so it’s possible to sit down and enjoy your lunch, but you can also take your plastic plate and your food outside and sit wherever you like on one of the many beautiful and cozy spots at Christiania. If you want to eat outside in the sunlight I recommend bringing your food into Haven (”the garden”) and to sit on the grass like a true Copenhagener! I have to warn you that this spot is a bit chilly during wintertime, but if you are wlready equipped for walking around the city, it should not be much of a problem.

If you are staying inside, Grønsagen has a wall with some very large windows, so with all the greens it’s kind of like being inside a greenhouse, but luckily without the damp. There is something very beautiful and fragile about the interior and the way the light falls inside this place is gorgeous. Remember to enjoy this!

Ingolfs Kaffebar Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Ingolfs Kaffebar is a really good reason to come to Amager. This cosy cafe / restaurant / bar is a favorite among a lot of the locals and with good reason. When you visit Ingolfs you’ll feel taken care of the their friendly staff. You can eat great food in relaxed surroundings. Have great coffee. Listen to live music. Enjoy life!

Ingolfs Kaffebar is a great place to have brunch with the family. Lunch with friends, and a romantic dinner with your sweetheart. Or you can sit and enjoy your own company with coffee and a lovely piece of cake. The choice is yours!
The live events have high priority and you can see the program on the website along with really great photos of prior events.

Kate's Joint Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

Kate’s Joint has been one of my favorite places to eat out since I was a child. It is located in the heart of Nørrebro and therefore ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy the city.

The single room is small and warm with beautiful and slanting wooden tables and there are no chairs but benches to support the intimate atmosphere. There is a small display of art on the bright orange walls, jazz on the stereo and magazines and newspapers to read if you are dining alone. The restaurant is often filled to the breaking point with locals, chatting about life and the city, while eating of steaming plates.

Kate’s dishes are from all over the world but the common denominator is SPICY. African, Indian, Indonesian and Caribbean food can be found on the menu and whether you prefer the delicious Coco Cashew Curry with lamb or a veggie dish with lentils and eggplant you won’t be disappointed if you give Kate responsibility for your dinner!

I recommend either wine or one of the sweet ecological fruit drinks to go with the hot food – or maybe a traditional Indian yogurt Lassie. The service can be a bit slow but it pays off because the food is so good. Highly recommendable!

Kvarterhuset Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Kvarterhuset in Jemtelandsgade is my local library, but it’s not all books. It is so much more! The location is a great big house where all kinds of cultural events take place. Click here for the recent program.

In the bright hall you can read newspapers, magazines and just hang out. But my favorite part is the café located to the right when you go in. The service is friendly and attentive, the prices are very reasonable.

The thing I like most about Kvarterhuset is that it is located sort of out of the way, but it’s still easy to get to. It’s just behind the church on Holmbladsgade – close to Amagerbrogade and Amagerbro metro station. And just behind the building is Prags Boulevard – a 1,8 km. park and activity area designed by Kristine Jensens Tegnestue in 2005. Read more about the area on Copenhagen X.

Lê Lê nhà hàng Copenhagen (by Lê Lê)

Lê Lê is a Vietnamese New Yorker style street kitchen. Lively, loud, busy, fast, authentic and cool. Four Vietnamese siblings, who came to Denmark, as refugees with their parents a generation ago, own the restaurant. Their family pictures beautify the walls alongside big art works in the huge open space, creating an intimate yet cosy ambiance.

The food is a delicious mix of Vietnamese and European cuisine served quickly and stylishly by a very attentive crowd of staff. With its long tables and benches set up alongside the busy open kitchen Lê Lê is a perfect place if you are lots of people. In the far end of the high ceiled space you will find the smaller tables which are probably better if you happen to be on a date or together in a smaller crowd.

Quite often you will find a long, but surprisingly fast moving queue outside as it is not possible to make reservations ahead. Whilst waiting to be seated you can enjoy a well made cocktail in the bar or lounge in a Chesterfield couch. My personal favourite is the Q4, a fresh mojito style drink with the perfect mix of sour lemons, rum and sweet syrup which will be sure to kick-start your evening to become a fun and uplifting experience. But be careful, all the drinks contain 4cl spirits, so one too many will quickly make you forget what you came for.

Madmanifesten Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Madmanifesten is a hidden treasure in Amager. Tucked away in Tyrolgade just by Amagerbrogade and Øresundsvej this very modern place to eat doesn’t have huge signs and flashing lights. They get you on the hook with wonderful meals made from organic products of the season.

The course of the day is what the kitchen wants to cook and that makes this place stand out from the other cafes in the area. The staff is great at telling you about the specials of the day and you can feel that this place is made from love. I can also warmly recommend the weekend brunch buffet.

This is also a good place to take the kids, but don’t worry if you don’t have any – and don’t want the McDonalds playroom next to your dinner. In the back of café is a really cool playroom that almost makes you want to be 7 years old again.

And when you are at Madmanitesten – look up! They have really cool pictures in the ceiling. And the rest of the decor is also beautiful and simple. I especially like the black Verner Panton lamps hanging over all the tables. Please note that the place is usually quite crowded, so reservations are needed if you are a larger group of people.

Massimo Copenhagen (by Tue Rasmussen)

I love every inch of Massimo!

On the surface Massimo is just another small pizza place, like thousands of others on every street corner of Copenhagen.

Except for the incredibly entertaining and friendly Italians behind the counter, they’re always dancing around while making their delicious food and listening to mixed music.

It has been voted the best fast food restaurant in Copenhagen several times, and is always packed with people even though it’s a bit away from the centre.
But even though the place is packed with people and the place is very small, the service is always fast and attentive.

The pizzas taste wonderful and with reasonable prices, especially their mozzarella pizzas are great.

An extra treat would be to speak to them in Italian or Spanish, they will go crazy! So if you’re anywhere near Copenhagen, and feel like having a good time with some funky fast speaking Italians, you should definitely go to Massimo.

Morgenstedet Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

Just walking through Christiania is guaranteed to open up your eyes to a different and diverse experience. The contrasts are more than evident; worn down buildings, beautiful natural surroundings, the many different types of people, young and old, hippie and punk, drunks and pushers, artists and skaters. Christiania has many colours – and many hidden gems to explore.

One of them is a small, cozy restaurant, a bit out of the way for the general tourist, but not impossible to reach either. Coming through Pusher Street passing by funny sounding places like “The Opera”, “The Moon Fisher”, “Woodstock” and other interesting scenes, finally you will arrive at the gates of a lovely little hidden house on a corner – sounding the lovely name “Morgenstedet”.

Entering through the skewed garden gate you will come into the small, but very warm and charming little restaurant, that will meet you with a well known smell of good homemade food. I can’t think of a more relaxed and cosy place to enjoy a filling, tasty vegetarian meal than here.

There is something wholly unpretentious about it – as goes for most of Christiania. The food is wonderful, prepared with organic ingredients only. The bread is a delic

acy in its own right. Brought in daily from the famous bakery “Lagkagehuset” located at Christianshavn square.

Morgenstedet means “The Morning Place” – which by the way has no reference to the opening hours which are noon till 21:00 daily.

Pasta Basta Copenhagen (by Frederikke Rode)

Pasta Basta is a two floor restaurant in the centre of the city. The walls are painted in a warm orange color that somehow manages not to be annoying. The chairs are green and walls on the first floor are only decorated at certain places. On the floor below the walls are hand painted with patterns in earthy colors. The light falls beautifully through the large windows and though the guests can be a bit cramped together, it never feels claustrophobic. Sweet waitresses in polka dotted dresses will take your order.

As the name of the restaurant may suggest, the big deal here is the pasta. If you are in the mood for something light for lunch or you need an appetizer, the cold buffet might be for you. The cook prepares a variable of cold pasta dishes and salads, with vegetables and dressing to every taste. The buffet is never the same, but all the dishes always combine flavors naturally. If you want a warm meal, the pasta with mushrooms and cream is delicious, especially in autumn or winter, when it is cold outside. The Salmon dish is also worth a try. If you are not in the mood for pasta, do not fear, for other dishes are served! This might be tuna, lobster or Spanish ham. What really makes Pasta Basta worth remembering are the opening hours.

Very few restaurants in Copenhagen are open at night, but Pasta Basta is and that makes it a good place for for dinner after a trip to the theater or some other arrangement in the evening. If you are having a night out, you can go directly from your meal to drinks and sand in Coconut Bar downstairs. Enjoy.

Riz Raz Copenhagen (by Tue Rasmussen)

Riz Raz is known throughout all of Copenhagen for its wonderful food and friendly service.

It is also one the only truly successful vegetarian restaurants in Copenhagen, and they have been established for many years now.

A lot of people don’t even know that it’s a vegetarian restaurant, simply because they just remember eating really tasty food.

Riz Raz has put a lot of effort into creating a great buffet, which is highly recommendable.

Truth be told, I’ve never tried anything other than the buffet, and I’ve been going to Riz Raz for quite some time now.

There’s nothing wrong with the other meals, the buffet is just a bit cheaper, and when you walk in and see all that delicious food, you want to dig in right away :p

The Restaurant itself is divided into 2 floors, with no difference besides that the buffet is on the bottom floor, so that’s where i would locate myself if I were you.

The Tables & Chairs are wooden and with a Mediterranean look, and there are also many colorful decorations&paintings in the restaurant.

Finally, if I should recommend something from Riz Raz, it would definitely be the Falafel ;)

Salon 39 Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

Opened in 2007, Salon 39 is an ambitious attempt at a cocktail bar + restaurant. And the place is a huge success, so if you want to eat, remember to book in advance. The style is relaxed in a dark minimalistic atmosphere and the jazz or blues music is – of course – from vinyl stock.

Both cocktails and kitchen are of a very high standard with a wide selection of cocktails – including exotic numbers like the classic Sazerac with absinthe, for instance. The kitchen favours simple but excellent menus with an obvious Italian bias. The audience is a mix of locals and people who come from far away to experience this rather unique place. I like!

Smag Copenhagen (by Mette Walsted)

If you are hungry and looking for a healthy alternative to Nørrebrogades greasy pizza and kebab scene, turn around the corner up Fælledvej and find the tiny little take away place Smag.

The name says it all – smag means taste – and there are lots of good stuff to make your taste buds long for more. Apart from the three weekly specials – a soup, a warm meal and a dessert – you are sure to find the best and most varied sandwiches and salads on Nørrebro. All sandwiches are made up of either dark rye bread or organic whole wheat. The salads come in a great variety ranging from green leaf over bulgur to quinoa and the friendly staff are happy to mix just the salad you want out of all the fresh and delicious tasting ingredients.

The owners Mads and Martin both have a degree in nutrition and also offer advice on healthy lifestyle and a good nutritious diet. For a food lover on the go this place is heaven and what all fast food should be like.

As an extra bonus to those of you who get there before 3pm you will be treated with fresh fruit and water to go with your meal. And don’t forget to try out some of their delicate specialties from the fridge, the honey and thyme roasted cashews being my personal favourite.

Soupanatural Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

What better to nourish your soul than with soup? What better to brighten your mood than with cocktails? And what better place to go than Soupanatural in Guldbergsgade? Not only is everything organic – 1 Dkr. out of every soup or cocktail you buy go to charity. And the cocktails are min. 4 cl. alcohol. What’s not to like? I’ll hop on my bike for soup and cocktails like that any night!

Soupanatural offers 4-6 different kinds of soups daily. You can order 250 ml. or 400 ml. with the special of the day costing 30,-/40,- They also have a good selection of cocktails – and you can get everything to go. But the place is really a great place to hang out, so stay in and enjoy the comfort food, cocktails and organic beer. See the selection on the website.

If you are up and about early and want a good start on you day – try the porridge and a smoothie. They open at 08:00 most weekdays.

The location is very typical Nørrebro with a very environmentally way of making business. They don’t just talk about making a greener world – they start with the soup and everything that goes with it. The service is friendly and welcoming and even though the space is quite small the heart behind is big and warm.

Sporvejen Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

If you are claustrophobic, the hyper-intimate Sporvejen will not be your cup of tea. Sporvejen is a bistro, albeit with a very specialized menu, and the interior is skilfully modelled after a tram car 1950 (or something like that), with a dark brown as the predominant colour.

The place is unique and quite an institution and has, since 1974, been serving some of the best burgers in town. If you are planning an informal, intimate dinner for two… romantic or not… the place is great. This goes for a fast business lunch as well. Sporvejen is placed in one of Copenhagen’s sweet spots, at Gråbrødre Torv. This is a central as it gets, basically.

The place is about burgers and they are proud of it. But the kitchen – which is right in the tram car with you – offers omelets and various chicken dishes as well. You can have soft drinks, tea, coffees, beer, wine and even a Lumumba, should you so please.

Prices are very reasonable. A serious quality burger can be had for around DKK 60,00. Definitely different and worth a visit.

The Royal Danish Playhouse Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

It is one of those waterfront spots. The Royal Danish Play House is the newly inaugurated (2008) play scene of the Royal Danish Theatre and is located beautifully on the waterfront – just opposite the also fairly new opera.

Apart from the theatre itself, there is a restaurant, a cocktail bar and the café – all of them open for all including non theater goers.

If you want to dine somewhere out of the ordinary, I recommend the restaurant. Named after Ofelia, Hamlet’s lass, the restaurant is set in this huge, yet strangely intimate, industrial room with nothing but space, sky and the water. And white linen tablecloths. Definetely. The kitchen matches the unique setting with excellent offerings for brunch, lunch and dinner.

The café serves good quality without being cosmic about it. Light meals, fine teas, quality beer and of course coffee variants to your heart’s content.

And then there is the cocktail bar, in this perfect setting, which is quite serious about its cocktails and will serve you classics as well as some unique house cocktails. Opens at 18:30.

The place has free wireless Internet (indoors – possibly reachable outside – didn’t check). I recommend the website with more details, i.e. wine, actual menus and so on.

Vinylbar Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnlogsson)

This cosy spot at Sortedamssøen has it all. Great coffee of all kinds. Check! Extensive menue. Check! Nice view of the lake. Check! Vinyl records in the cieling of the restroom. Check! The last part is almost my favorite thing about the place – but all of the decor has that very retro/low key feel that makes you feel welcome and at home. Oh – and if you have a dog, it’s allowed to go inside as well.

Vinylbar is great for brunch as it offers a large buffet. Order a warm drink and get cosy inside. Or watch the eager runners sprint by, the new moms with their strollers, old people with dogs and just life in general. Be careful when stepping outside – you have to cross a cycle path. You can also stay for dinner and in the evening there’s cocktails and music.

This is one of those all through the day kind of places to hang out and enjoy the city.
