Theaters (theatres) – All our local tips

Our favorite Copenhagen local theater (theatre) stages and playhouses. This is where our Copenhagen locals see their operas, plays, cabaret and ballet performances… Copenhagen insider tips: always up-to-date!

Kvarterhuset Copenhagen (by Kathrine Felland Gunnløgsson)

Kvarterhuset in Jemtelandsgade is my local library, but it’s not all books. It is so much more! The location is a great big house where all kinds of cultural events take place. Click here for the recent program.

In the bright hall you can read newspapers, magazines and just hang out. But my favorite part is the café located to the right when you go in. The service is friendly and attentive, the prices are very reasonable.

The thing I like most about Kvarterhuset is that it is located sort of out of the way, but it’s still easy to get to. It’s just behind the church on Holmbladsgade – close to Amagerbrogade and Amagerbro metro station. And just behind the building is Prags Boulevard – a 1,8 km. park and activity area designed by Kristine Jensens Tegnestue in 2005. Read more about the area on Copenhagen X.

The Royal Danish Playhouse Copenhagen (by Morten Pors Nielsen)

It is one of those waterfront spots. The Royal Danish Play House is the newly inaugurated (2008) play scene of the Royal Danish Theatre and is located beautifully on the waterfront – just opposite the also fairly new opera.

Apart from the theatre itself, there is a restaurant, a cocktail bar and the café – all of them open for all including non theater goers.

If you want to dine somewhere out of the ordinary, I recommend the restaurant. Named after Ofelia, Hamlet’s lass, the restaurant is set in this huge, yet strangely intimate, industrial room with nothing but space, sky and the water. And white linen tablecloths. Definetely. The kitchen matches the unique setting with excellent offerings for brunch, lunch and dinner.

The café serves good quality without being cosmic about it. Light meals, fine teas, quality beer and of course coffee variants to your heart’s content.

And then there is the cocktail bar, in this perfect setting, which is quite serious about its cocktails and will serve you classics as well as some unique house cocktails. Opens at 18:30.

The place has free wireless Internet (indoors – possibly reachable outside – didn’t check). I recommend the website with more details, i.e. wine, actual menus and so on.
