This place is an almost legendary hangout in Copenhagen. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and even though the majority of the guests are local it is also strangely international, probably due to the fact that many of the staff doesn’t necessarily speak Danish.

The interior is slightly curious. Lamp shades are doll heads and the place is full of stuffed animals that are not looking like you would expect them to. Actually most of them are dressed. And seem to have at bit of a rebel attitude. All the animal dolls are made ​​by the artist Philip V. Jensen

The art exhibited on the walls is for sale and is made by changing artists and replaced a few times a year.

Bankeråt has a wide selection of beer, but personally I can recommend their Irish coffee. My friends and I have carefully and several times sampled the beverage, and there can be no doubt that it is the best in town.

Bankeråt also boasts a varied menu with everything from brunch to sandwiches to lamb stew, and the kitchen is open till 21:30 every day of the week.

In Denmark we have a special type of bar called a Bodega. A bodega is dark, has tinted windows and is frequented primarily by old drunks. You can smoke in a bodega and the beer is cheap! Most bodegas are empty during day except for a handful of regulars, but come to life at night with young people coming in, in search of indoor smoking and cheap drinks. Palæ Bar is an upscale bodega. It is located on an expensive address and it shows in the clientele. You’ll find old retired lawyers, architects and doctors alongside artists and journalists. The average age is well above 50 but it lends an informal air to the place. People play chess, discuss jazz and politics and in general just enjoy life over a beer or a glass of rose wine.

A simple lunch is served every day, as Palæ Bar gets a big order of Smørrebrød (the infamous danish open-faced sandwich) delivered from a local take-out place. It is served for lunch as long as they last, and if you are really lucky, there might be a piece or two left later in the evening as well. Every 3 weeks on Sundays there is live jazz.

On sunny evenings quite a crowd can gather on the sidewalk outside enjoying the last rays of the day. Not a bad place to spend an evening.

Next to one of the best, but often forgotten parks in central Copenhagen, lies Ørsted Ølbar. Named after the Ørstedsparken park, Ørsted Ølbar has one of the city’s greatest all-round selections of beer. There are many beer bars in Copenhagen. Some specialize in Belgian beers, some in British and some in American and Danish microbrews. But Ørsted Ølbar can do a little of everything.

Here you can find everything from Danish microbrews to Italian sour ales and all the classics in between. Sporting around 200 different beers, with a good selection on tap, Ørsted Ølbar is sure to satisfy your every beer need. They even have their own housebrew, a Kölsch named Beerdog brewed by local microbrewery Amager Bryghus.

Some of the Copenhagen beer bars have a tendency to be quite snooty at times, but at Ørsted there is none of that. You’ll get good guidance from the knowledgeable staff but you’re free to drink whatever you like, either cheap and simple or expensive and exclusive. Attributing to the relaxed atmosphere is the foosball table and TVs showing football/soccer games. And of course a couple of seats outside.

So basically you can summarize Ørsted as a great local bar, with good people, great staff, the occassional football game on TV and a lot of great beer. What’s not to like?
