Originally built in 1859 and functioning as St. Stephen’s Parochial School from 1961 until its closure by the Department of Education in 1969 due to the low enrollment and high renovation costs, this building has served generations of Dubliners.
In 1997, the building was purchased and revamped to highlight the architectural delights of a bygone era. Today, the site is known as The Schoolhouse Hotel. While local residents aren’t likely in need of a stay at this 4 star hotel, or any other local hotel, Dubliners are fortunate in that there is something for everyone as The Schoolhouse’s cozy restaurant and bar are open to the general public.
With ample seating, a friendly service, and an experience not to be found in any other spot around town, The Schoolhouse Hotel & Restaurant has become a favorite place for many locals on any given weekend afternoon. The dining and bar areas are situated where the original classrooms were located, allowing you to take in the history of the site and giving you a chance to relish in the old-world charm that surrounds Ballsbridge.
If you happen to stay here (lucky you!), or stop over for a pint, make sure to sit in the outdoor area should the sun be shining, or by the cozy fireplace should the weather take a turn. With The Grand Canal near by and the Georgian charm of the homes around it, this locale can provide a memorable experience.
