The Hacienda is the ultimate word of mouth local Dublin gem. I walked by it every week for two years without knowing it was a functioning pub. Located down some quiet streets beside the Fruit and Vegetable Market, you can only enter by ringing a buzzer on the door under The Hacienda sign. The opening hours are sporadic, but it is usually open by 20:00 with last entry at 00:30. You will know it’s open if the inner yellow door is open. Entry is at the owner’s discretion so be very nice.
The owner, Shay, is a local legend who presides over the bar most nights providing good banter. Inside, it looks like a cross between a Spanish colonial villa and a ship. 80s music plays on a constant loop, and you can play pool or just relax. The clientele is a mix of all ages. Matthew McConaughey is a fan as can be seen from the many photos of him on the wall, along with other local and international celebrity visitors. You can get beer, wine and a huge selection of tequila. This is the perfect place to relax for a late drink where you can still chat and hear your friends, but you want a bit of a buzz about the place too.
