Fallon and Byrne – Gourmet paradise

Fallon and Byrne is a one-stop shop for all things gourmet in Dublin. A food hall/restaurant/wine bar, it’s spread out over three floors of the former telephone exchange building in the heart of the city centre.

The Food Hall occupies the ground floor. This is an upmarket and slightly pricey supermarket inspired by New York’s Dean and Deluca, selling fresh produce, fish, meat and cheese as well as different food from all over the world. If you are looking for an unusual ingredient, this is the place to go. There is also a section selling hot meals, sandwiches and coffees to have in the cafe, downstairs in the wine cellar or to take away.

The restaurant upstairs is a bright, spacious, elegant place designed like a classic French brasserie. The food is perhaps a little pricey for what it is at dinner (the lunch menu is quite good value), but the customer service is fantastic. There is also a bar area serving excellent cocktails. They’ve just opened a second restaurant at the People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire.

In the basement you will find a busy, candlelit wine bar serving light food and platters of cheese and meats. You can also buy bottles of wine here to take away. It’s one of my favourite places to meet friends on those evenings where some people want food, and some just a drink. The food shop is open standard hours, while the wine bar and restaurant stay open later.
