Usually, when trying a restaurant for the first time, one thing jumps off the menu and I have to order it. Farmer Browns’ menu gave me real trouble recently. I wanted everything!
Known for their burgers, and each sounding more mouth-watering than the last (my companion chose The Massey Ferguson – turns out it’s a great idea to order something named after a tractor), I ended up choosing tacos. While this decision usually brings me pure joy, it was bittersweet in this case, because it meant I was ruling out the incredible wings, ribs and steaks on offer. My life is very difficult.
I miraculously recovered when everything arrived. I’d picked tortillas with salmon, avocado, feta, cucumber and pomegranate, and tacos with marinated pork shoulder, celariac remoulade and apple slaw, with a side of elotes (corn-on-the-cob with parmesan, butter and chilli – one of my favourite accompaniments to Mexican food) and a sangria. If you can imagine such a thing, this was all even better than it sounds.
Although we absolutely didn’t need it, we then split a warm white-chocolate brownie. I’m more of a savoury girl, but this dessert was so good that I practically snatched the plate over to my side of the table.
Farmer Brown’s is truly one of the best comfort food restaurants I have experienced in a while. With a warm, cosy feeling inside, and a fun, summery feeling on their small front terrace (complete with fake grass) this place will hit the spot whatever the season.
