Finnegan’s Pub – Michelle Obama’s local

When a pub has the Michelle Obama seal of approval, you know you’re onto a winner. Finnegan’s has been a firm Dalkey favourite for many years, a true local pub. While her husband addressed world crises at the G20 summit in Northern Ireland, America’s First Lady was putting the world to rights with Bono in this South Dublin local. Although I prefer not to invite any comparisons to Bono, Finnegan’s has always been one of my favourite places to bring visitors to in Dublin, so they can experience a traditional local pub.

A visit to Finnegan’s on a Saturday afternoon will find several generations of families gathered around tables in the snug, parents and grandparents enjoying a pint, while children make do with fizzy orange and packs of crisps. Irish literary legend and local resident Maeve Binchy came here on a daily basis for her lunch, and regulars can still point out her favourite table.

Finnegan’s is definitely the place to go for a good pint of Guinness, but they have a decent wine selection if that doesn’t appeal. A word of warning for evening visitors, food is only served at lunch so you will have to make do with a famed Irish delicacy, cheese and onion crisps.
