The first thing I noticed when I recently walked into Il Valentino were chocolate-chip scones which I’d never seen before but they seem like a winning combination. Unfortunately, as I’d just been to the dentist, my conscience got the better of me and I had to resist the temptation. But it gives you an idea of the type of goodies available here. Located just where Dublin 2 becomes Dublin 4, Il Valentino, as the name suggests, is an Italian style bakery. A lot of places in Dublin like to describe themselves as ‘continental’ but this seems to be the real deal. The Irish owner spent some time in Italy and came home with a philosophy on how to bake better bread. This is proved in the generous range of breads and pastries available (baked on the premises). With Italian pop playing in the background and big, bright windows for people watching, it’s a nice place to take a time-out for a few minutes. It’s in a great location as well in the redeveloped Grand Canal Dock area. So if you’re in the neighbourhood, drop into Valentino’s and if there is one thing you should try, then go for the addictive ricotta cookies. Details about this spot (Show on map)
