The Irish Times, published from Monday to Saturday, has been in business for over 150 years starting out as a newspaper for the Protestant establishment and in recent years becoming one of the country’s most important journals of record. For many years letters to the editor of the Irish Times began with “Sir”, until Geraldine Kennedy took up the post. She recently retired and has been replaced by a ‘Sir’ again. The readers’ letters are a window into what Irish people are talking and thinking about. They range from impassioned diatribes on political and social affairs to readers offering their own humorous take on the nation’s affairs – these usually take of the form of groan-inducing wordplay! A quick glance at a recent edition of the paper reveals some of the interesting topics that prompt letters to the Editor – the amount of garlic used in recipes, how the word ‘odious’ should be pronounced, etc. My own opinion is that these people have far too much time on their hands! Of course, you can buy the Irish Times anywhere but a good place as any is Eason‘s on O’Connell Street – which has been serving Dubliners’ newspaper needs for many years now.
