Locks – Casual fine dining

Locks is one of a new breed of Dublin restaurants that offers the kind of fine dining normally reserved for spots with a Michelin star, with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The restaurant is spread over two floors of a Victorian house on the Grand Canal, with lovely big windows to watch swans floating by on the water. It has been set up by two chef friends who have worked in some of Dublin’s best kitchens, and now have found a place to call their own.

The food is expertly done, using great local ingredients. On my last trip I had Connemara salmon tartare, beetroot with home-made yoghurt and Lardo, freshly caught hake with mussels and caper brown butter, and a generous helping of Irish Knockdrinna and Coolatin cheese. They also have a nicely priced wine-list with great variety, and a selection of Irish craft beers.

The waiting staff strike a great balance between friendliness and professionalism, and the warm, bright rooms are a great place to while away an afternoon or evening. The lunch and early bird menus are excellent value, and there is also an a la carte menu on offer. This is my favourite place to go for a relaxing weekend lunch to celebrate a special occasion, or just because…
