Back in the days when I lived in student accommodation in Rathmines, the South area of Dublin, I discovered the Portobello quarter and used to come here for small picnics or just to relax, sit by the water away from the busy town (which is only 10 minutes from the North).
Since then my life’s changed quite a bit. I’ve moved to a different part of Dublin but still love coming back to Portobello. Even in winter/early spring it is fun to chill out with swans that are swimming around, get some snacks from a nearby shop (I used to get Kebab from the place called “Hit the Spot” down the Rathmines Road next to the Lidl Supermarket) and come to the bridge to sit down for a bit.
There are plenty of pubs around in case it gets rainy or chilly, and on the weekend there are often open air fests that take place in the area – this is when Portobello gets really crowded. If you, like me, like it quiet – come here during the week!
