I’m not really sure what Californian food is – although if mealtimes in the Golden State are anything like they are at Calistoga on Rose Street North Lane then I’m all in.
The restaurant is not the kind of place you stumble across. It’s on a lane off a pedestrian street in the New Town but it’s well worth the extra effort to find.
The menu changes every month but everything I’ve tried has been delicious. There are Asian fusion and Mexican hints, which I guess is where the Californian bit comes into the food.
The best bit of Calistoga though is their wide range of Californian wines. One of my favourite dining experiences in Edinburgh is a wine tasting dinner at Calistoga, spending an hour tasting five wines with an expert followed by a lovely meal in the restaurant. The poor wine expert answers all the questions my friends and I throw at him and has never once pointed out that we’ve no idea what we’re talking about.
There are great options for dinner (minus the wine tasting) too with a couple of set menu options at different price points as well as the a la carte menu.
This is a little bit of California in Edinburgh; it’s just a shame they can’t provide the Californian weather!
