Edinburgh College of Art – Escape into art

Edinburgh College of Art, (ECA to the inhabitants) is its own little world, like an artistic Narnia or Hogwarts. The beautiful red sandstone building contains the ECA students’ weird and wonderful endeavours – huge papier-maché mice, psychedelic video exhibitions, and abstract paintings – be ready for anything! There’s usually a free exhibition on in the impressive main hall, which has a balcony as well as ground floor. Keep an eye out for special exhibitions and the odd fashion show. If you visit on an ordinary day though, chances are you’ll have the place to yourself. They also display plaster casts of the Elgin Marbles, originally taken from the Parthenon in Athens (the originals are housed in London), so anyone with an interest in sculpture should take a look.

If you go on, (and the the corridors seemingly go on forever), poke your head round a few doorways and you’ll catch a glimpse of the artists’ studios: rooms full of light, with paint splattered on the floors and excellent views looking out at Edinburgh Castle. Just be careful about not disturbing the artists at work!
