Monkey Barrel has become one of my all time favourite places not only in Edinburgh but in Scotland. It is a much needed and welcome addition to Edinburgh’s comedy scene and acts as only one of a few dedicated comedy bars in Scotland.
What makes Monkey Barrel special is the people. It’s a club run by comedians and comedy lovers alike, and the crowd that it attracts are one of the most encouraging and open-minded I’ve experienced. The club is open 7 nights a week and offers a great variety of comedy, ranging from the professional, more traditional nights to the experimental ‘anything goes’ nights.
If you’re in Edinburgh for a while and fancy trying out the stage, every Wednesday night is Top Banana which is their new act competition. I love this night especially, as not only is it free for students, it is a really loving and encouraging space for people to try out new stuff and generally just be themselves. There’s no particular style of comedy going, I’ve seen poetry, rapping, acting, storytelling and more and it’s that variety that makes the night so interesting.
The bar also stocks a really superb selection of drinks and offers packages such as a couples VIP package, including reserved seating, a bottle of prosecco and a canapé selection if you want to spend the night in style. No matter what your style of humour is, this club has a night for you and really should not be missed!
