Seemingly a regular pub on the edge of Hunter Square – complete with quaint sign and oak furniture – Tron’s secret lies beneath the surface. The staircase leads down to a cavernous basement of stone and wooden roof-beams, full of nooks and crannies, and with multiple floor levels. A regular student haunt, there’s also a pool table if you’re so inclined. The music can get quite loud: it’s not a quiet local by any stretch of the imagination.
I generally go to Tron before heading on to a gig or club: you’re generally guaranteed sitting space, and the drinks are cheap for the location, with a good range of beers on tap. The large TV’s generally show big sporting events, with a good atmosphere downstairs. A heartbeat away from Cabaret Voltaire, the Jazz Bar, and Cowgate, it’s excellent for a wee drink before moving on. It’s also in an ideal location for a drink while exploring the Royal Mile.
