Located in Frankfurt’s Bahnhofsviertel, another great space to experience contemporary art off the beaten path is the exhibition platform basis. Though not an extensive museum, basis offers over three hundred and fifty square meters of exhibition space for young contemporary artists to present their wares. A rotating calendar of exhibitions ensures that the facility is always presenting something new. Artistic media span the spectrum of painting, printing, and photography, to film, audio-visual, and even music.
Housed in the facilities on Gutleutstr. there is also a library of various materials related to contemporary art where you can often find many artists who work in the ateliers in the remainder of the building. Aside from the exhibition space, basis provides artists with work space as well as support programs; if you go on a Saturday, as I like to do, you’ll often encounter many of the young artists presenting their work in the exhibition rooms. Hence, you’ll get a first-hand opportunity to learn about the thoughts/impulses behind their creations.
As the exhibitions change consistently, check basis’ calendar for their complete program of events. During the summer months, activities tend to concentrate in June and July, so check it out before you go on holiday!
