Frankfurt-am-Main is one of few European cities to have a number of skyscrapers and highrises in the city centre and that is why Frankfurt is also called Mainhattan. That brings me to Bankenviertel, the banking district of Frankfurt, where I live.
In a city full of skyscrapers, it becomes difficult to find an open space – sunny and without the shadow of a nearby building. With very few sunny days given the climate, I love Westendplatz. It is a small squarish patch in the Westend area of Frankfurt. At first glance, it seems not so green, not so well maintained, with a small kiosk at one end, a small kids’ playground at the other and glass recycling bins somewhere in the middle.
But I love it, because I used to run around this very small ‘platz’ when I started focussing on being more active. Because, this is where I can get my share of sun in the summer or winter without having to fight for a bench. Because, I can watch people – well-dressed bankers who eat their grab-and-go lunch here, people who like to add a shot of Vitamin D to their day, or enjoy a coffee or beer from the kiosk while they people watch, people who revel in the sunshine alone or with someone, mothers with kids or dog-owners who watch their dogs roll around in the patch of grass. Most of all because, this is my spot of uninterrupted sun (when it is sunny) in Mainhattan!
