Lining the banks of the Main river, directly west of Frankfurt, there is an abundance of industrial spaces that expropriate the water’s edge from pedestrians and bike riders alike. However, in the Gutleutviertel, a few bridges down from the Hauptbahnhof, Orange Beach re-appropriates such space for the common citizen. Part kiosk, part event space, Orange Beach caters to those finishing a long afternoon working in their allotment gardens (Schrebergarten) and others congregating from all areas of the surrounding city.
The establishment offers a selection of drinks and ice cream, as well as an assortment of meat fresh off the grill, particularly during the latter portion of the week. Weekends there’s also often a live music act competing for your attention with the consistent train traffic passing overhead; if not, there’s a constant stream of reggae blasting from the old but still-potent sound system scattered around “the Beach”.
I recommend making your trip on a warm summer afternoon/evening; now that they’re nice and long, you can enjoy the sun while you bury your feet in the sand on the river’s edge. Sit close to the water and you’re sure to strike up a conversation with others who are likewise there to soak up some rays and beach-like atmosphere.
