When les Merveilleux de Fred, originally a Belgian establishment, opened in Plainpalais the huge beautiful chandelier instantly caught my eye. I did not know what to expect when I entered for the first time, but the moment I sat down I was totally convinced by the concept. I am a big fan of beautiful tea rooms and delicious pastries, at les Merveilleux I found both.
Of course, the Merveilleux, melt-in-the-mouth meringue coated with whipped cream and decorated with shavings of chocolate, are the stars in this pâtisserie. They come in different sizes and different flavors and have illustrious names such as the Incroyable, the Impensable, the Magnifique, the Sans-Culotte and the Excentrique. My favorite is the classic Merveilleux with chocolate flavor. Alongside the Merveilleux are other pastries such as the brioches, which are called ‘Cramiques’, available with raisins, sugar or chocolate.
I find it fascinating to watch the pastry chefs making the little cakes, adding layers of whipped cream and building artistic objects. Also great is that they serve not just any kind of tea but Kusmi tea at les Merveilleux.
The Merveilleux are a huge success and Fred has opened shops in France, England, Belgium and even New York. I am glad Fred has expanded to Switzerland now too.
