Whisky, they say, is an acquired taste. As true as that may be, I instantly liked the Bar du Nord, which specializes in it. With over 500 different whiskies, it has Switzerland’s second largest selection.
The Bar du Nord is located in the Rue Ancienne in Carouge, which is home to quite a few bars, but none quite like this one.
Founded in 1975 by the father of the current owner, who lives above his bar (how awesome is that?), it has been a fixture of Genevan night life ever since. It is frequented mostly by local, regular patrons who all know each other. That, the vintage furniture and the smooth jazz in the background make it feel almost frozen in time. Recently, the owner has started to use the original Bar du Nord logo again. It’s a walrus. You cannot get much cooler than that.
It is a great place to chill out with friends and have an actual conversation and quality drinks.
