A good cup of coffee. An ephemeral concept that is hard to pin down… but when I heard from several people that Birdie is the place to go for a solid roast, it was off to Rue des Bains in Plainpalais for me!
It’s bright, open, smells great, serves very tasty food & snacks and you definitely won’t be disappointed by the coffee. Need a quick perk-me-up? Espresso: check. Wanting something more mellow? Ozzie-style flat white: check. Rather have my favourite relaxation drink? Cappuccino: double-check.
Of course, if you’re just looking for a chill afternoon with a friend or 4, have a seat by the giant windows, order an aeropress and savour a few cups in a row. Who knows? Maybe you’ll get lucky and catch one of the fire trucks leaving the fire station (always to my son’s delight!).
Speaking of time with friends, in 2016 they expanded their once-tiny (but cozy!) coffee shop into the space next door, opening up the space and making it much simpler to be a bigger group. Why is this important? Simple: the lunch menu is fantastic. Healthy, fresh, brunch-style food available all day, the “lost brioche” is usually what I get: a thick piece of brioche soaked in egg batter and fried in a pan. Yum.
Don’t have time to sit and eat? Call ahead and ask for a lunchbox along with your coffee-to-go!
P.s. a “flat white” is microfoam poured over espresso.
