In a world of huge multiplex theaters awash with 3D this, and rumble-seat that, sometimes I just want the experience of a big screen with the comforts of home: salty popcorn and a glass of booze. Quality booze, mind, you. The Cinerama Empire takes a page from the heyday of “going out to the movies:” plush seats, plenty of room for your legs, a big screen… all updated with high-tech sound and projection. There’s even a well-stocked bar, with a deep range of whiskeys.
Need a date-night spot? The Empire has you covered. Last time there I booked one of the 22 numbered sofas-for-two up on the balcony, bucket of popcorn in one hand, Oban 14 whiskey in the other. My date had her g&t and a bag of pretzels.
A bit of history and trivia: originally built in 1967, the Empire started originally with arthouse movies, but by 1969, with dwindling audience, started showing pornographic films. In fact, this landmark of modernism design ran hardcore movies for discerning patrons right through 1996… Perhaps not the best tidbit to bring up on a date night, unless it’s to point out how incredible the refurbishment (finished in 2015) is: bright red seats, stocked bar, mainstream (and artsy) movies, and the largest single non-IMAX screen in Geneva.
Arrive early, grab a drink (or 2) and have a great evening!
