An artist needs a canvas. A street artist has the biggest canvas anyone can ever dream of. As a graphic designer I have an interest in street art and Ghent has some nice pieces of art. When I wander around the city I often see beautiful art by artists such as Chase, Strook, Bue The Warrior, Mr. Leenknecht and ROA. With concrete as their canvas they bring that extra touch of color to the city.
ROA is the pseudonym of an anonymous graffiti artist from Ghent. His work can be seen in Europe, the USA, South America and Australia and in his hometown. The typical black and white drawings are a nice addition to the cityscape. I’ve heard that Ljubljana spotter Mankica is a big fan of his work.
There is something to say about each artist, and I would love to do that. Maybe it’s easier to use the Concrete Canvas Tour Map. You can download it here. It’s a well designed map I often use to find my favorites. At the Grindbakken (read the Grindbakken article), young artists use the white concrete to try new things and they are worth the visit. You can start the tour everywhere. Enjoy!
