Before you have a look at the window or go inside this cosy shop, have a look at the baroque facade from the 17th century. In the decorations you can discover six Works of Mercy clearly. Depending on the different stories, the 7th one is or isn’t portrayed somewhere else on the facade. Temmerman claims to have created the 8th Work of Mercy: making life sweeter. They originally started with gingerbread, but now you can find all kind of sweets.

The best known local ones are the Cuberdons (or noses), made of Arabic gum and raspberry juice (originally they used elderberry juice). The other kinds you can try out are: Ruitjes, Poepkes, Punaizen, Maria’s, Toverballen, Kruiskes, Kloefkes, Wippers, Munteklontjes, Lutsepoepe, Zure Tuutjes, Beezekes, Fruithartjes, Wissel-agentjes, Belga’s, Begoniatjes, etc.

If you wish to try out these and other local specialties, you might take a nibbling tour on Saturday afternoons. It’s a nice way to discover the city with a guide and try out some local stuff.
