The Sphinx is one of those movie theatres where it seems like nothing has changed for the last twenty years. While other cinemas have become bigger, more comfortable and fully automated, at the Sphinx they still make you buy your ticket at the door and walk up three stories of old stairs before you reach your seat. The screens are not even a quarter of the size of those in modern theatres and there’s no place to put your soda except for the floor. However, where other cinemas so often fail, the Sphinx gets it right; they show great films. You will not be able to see Gigli here, or any other movie featuring Jennifer Lopez for that matter. No mind numbingly stupid romantic comedies or action movies where the special effects crowd out all the rest. At the Sphinx someone actually takes the time to select a quality offering of movies, which is rare nowadays. Adjacent to the movie theatre there’s a bar, a real one. No beer in plastic cups, candy vending machines or movie merchandising. You can have a real drink after seeing a real movie. Quite the treat if you ask me. Details about this spot (Show on map)
