Every six months or so a friend and I take turns in picking a selection of beers and have our very own mini beer tasting festival. By far the best place to go in Glasgow is ‘Hippo Beers’, a small ale emporium that has a huge variety of this versatile beverage.
Hippo Beers prides itself on championing the best of ales, stouts and lagers from every nook and cranny of the globe. There are beers from all over Europe, the USA, the Far East and more.
The staff at Hippo Beers are knowledgeable connoisseurs and are ready to give advice and pointers on what to try and what to try them with (not only wine that can compliment a good meal!). I have tried maybe 10% of the beers in this shop, but every time I go there new arrivals in abundance. There are hoppy white beers from Northern Europe, thick and rich Stouts from England, beautiful fruity ales from Scotland and Belgium and refreshing lagers from Hawaii, Mexico and Scandinavia.
Most of the beers and micro breweries, even connoisseurs, will not have heard of one of my favourite Scottish breweries ‘Alechemy’ or the French ‘Trappiste Rochefort’ and great named breweries such as ‘Big Hug Brewery’. There is also a selection of artisan ciders and new fruity beers, and wine too.
Also check out the Hippo Beers Tap Room, a new bar in Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street.
The shop has had to close temporarily whilst they look for new and bigger premises.
