Across the road from the Kelvingrove Bandstand venue a wee van has appeared. It doesn’t look much – like any other standard burger vans one finds staggering home on a Saturday night. But this is different and it’s pure smashing! It’s MacTassos Authentic Greek Gyros Van and it is exactly what it says!

I noticed it a while ago, paid it no attention but on passing it the other day with Winnie the dog there was a sizable queue forming and I could hear the lively laughing Scottish/Hellenic tones of its spritely owner. I stopped and perused the menu to find pork/chicken gyros, falafel pitas, halloumi pitas, hummus, tzatziki and everything you’d expect from a 5 o’ clock morning munch on the way back from ‘Cantina Social’ in Athens. I spoke to Tassos the owner, from Rhodes  and he explained that everything was made at home by himself and his wife including the juicy, oozing spit-roasting gyros spinning slowly behind him.

I had a chicken gyros and told him about my recent trip to Greece and he was delighted to sign and chat about his homeland, showing my photographs of him back home with freshly caught octopus and squid drying in his families back garden.

It’s a van selling authentic Gyros… and authentic they are, in my not-so-limited experience of Greek no-nonsense take-away cuisine! I enjoyed my food, experience and chat and left with a smile cause it made me remember Greece… a good thing!

And they’ve got a new big can!
