I used to think that you couldn’t get a decent fish and chips over here in the West, the East coast is usually the best. Then a few years back The Old Salty’s Fish and Chip Cafe opened up in the Finnestoun area followed by this ‘plaice’ in Byres road. I love a good Chippy and a Chippy that cooks their chips properly! Old Salty’s definitely know their onions!
Here the fish and chips are great, cooked to perfection with big chunky fresh fish in crispy tasty batter. The chips, which often go soggily wrong in other chip shops, are soft and hot in the middle here, with the right crunch on the outside. As well as the fish options (cod, haddock, hake, calamari and goujons), there are fantastic pies with a choice of steak, curried chicken or macaroni. And of course there are the old Scottish favourites of battered sausage, black pudding and haggis. You can also get breakfast, lunches and evening meals in the street level or upstairs restaurant.
Old Salty’s also sells a selection of pizzas and pastas and has a seasonal ‘grill’ menu depending what’s good and what’s available. The restaurant is licensed with a small selection of wines and beers.
New addition: the towering fish and calamari burger and gluten free and vegan options available too.
It’s a great spot for a sit-in meal or take away and you can book the upstairs area for private parties!
Gluten free options available too.
