This tiny gem of a place is tucked away on cobbled Eton Lane near Glasgow University. It’s covered in fake grass, which is appropriate as a ‘Peña’ in Spanish is a grass-roots meeting place for musicians and artists. Students must be filling their boots here as you can get a coffee and a toastie for 4 quid – yes, 4 quid! And it’s quality stuff, too. They take their coffee seriously and there’s a range of tasty toasties – Jean-Claude van Ham, anyone? Or The Veggie? – halloumi, courgette, mushroom and aioli.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, there’s the Banana-Man toastie (banana, peanut butter, hazelnuts and nutella) or the Nigella (raspberry, white chocolate, ricotta, almonds). And they also have the cheapest homemade brownies in town – a quid!
It’s on the small side, but that’s part of the charm – sit upstairs, or downstairs or outside if the weather’s good.
