And then, there was this very much-needed addition to the food landscape in Hamburg! Since January 2017, there has been another tasty reason to visit the Schanze if you want to eat great food and meet cool people. Introducing: The Cantina Popular. This tiny place is a small wonder: New Latin American Cuisine with a phenomenal bar (think Pisco variations) and an open kitchen in which a Peruvian and a Chilean chef battle for the best dishes.
This starts with modern takes on Ceviche, homemade bread, seafood treasures, Hearts on a stick (!!) or Pablo Neruda’s favorite soup. Sounds interesting? Wait until you see and try. It is exciting. And these are great dishes to share around the table. Add some excellent South American red wine or Beer from Peru and you will feel very satisfecho.
The staff is super nice and very competent and the overall vibe is very relaxed. The price tag is not very small and you might end up spending more then you intended, because you cannot stop ordering and trying more food. The quality of the produce is terrific and the dishes look unique. So, you have to compare it to a top-notch 1* restaurant and under that light, you are getting a bargain.
Note: This place is ‘the place to eat’ at the moment and it is rather small. You should get a reservation. Or just drop by a little earlier. This winter they are trying out a lunch from Tuesday through Thursday.
