3-Zimmer-Wohnung Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

“Have you never been to a private party in Hamburg? Welcome in our 3-Zimmer-Wohnung (3 room apartment).

The first room: here is our quirky living room with the big cosy couch. Just sit down and relax! Oh, first of all you wanna see our nice apartment? Ok, i’ll show you around: we have a second living room, because many friends come for drinks every day. Feel free in our colorful rooms with the awesome lights. Here we go, this is our bedroom – if you want, just lay down on the bed, pssssst: there is a PlayStation (with projector!!) in the bedside cabinet, if you are feeling bored play some games or check out the table soccer (kicker). The small corridor is great for smalltalk.

In our open kitchen beside the cooker and fridge, you will find the bar, where you’ll get all drinks and beer. It is always crowed there like in every private party in Hamburg – the kitchen is the place to be. Feel free and have fun, i have to take great care of all my other guests.

Nice to have you here! Cheers!”

Alsterwanderweg Hamburg (by Ute Kreitz)

The “Alsterwanderweg” is a hiking trail that runs along the Alster River for about 56km. The southern section of the trail (22km) leads through the ‘Alstertal’ (Alster valley) with wonderful parks and villas, along the outer and the inner Alster, and terminates directly in the heart of Hamburg: at the harbor where the Alster runs into the Elbe River. The trail is very popular with locals year-round as every season brings its own charm to this scenic route.

Take the public transport up north to Poppenbüttel to begin your 5-hour adventure either on foot or by bicycle. As you head south you’ll sometimes follow the meandering river on its right then on its left again.

There are some sections where you’ll need to cross or walk along a street. Some of the many rowing clubs and locks on your way down to Winterhude have restaurants with a gorgeous view of the river.

After passing through Eppendorf, you’ll reach the spacious Alsterpark on the outer Alster, a very wide section of the river with a beautiful view of the inner city’s skyline. Finally, you’ll know you’re on the last stretch of the path when you pass under Kennedy- and Lombardsbrücke to arrive at the inner Alster and the city center.

Leave the Alsterarkaden behind you and terminate this exciting hike at the “Baumwall” or “Landungsbrücken” metro stop. Although the direction of trail is marked by signs, be sure to bring a map with you!

Bar Roosen Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

After a long day in university or city daytrip it’s one of the best places to relax. Similar to Zoë Bar (see this article) it is filled with many couches, but they are separate. That makes you feel like you are in a friend’s house.

Good for relaxing with an old friend or serious talks. The wine is awesome there and costs around 3 Euro. An Astra Beer is under 2 Euro. The staff is like the music; veeeeery laid-back and easy-going. It’s perfect for a little break between day and night. In summer they’ll open the big windows again and so you’ve the feeling of sitting outside on a couch! :)

The atmosphere is a bit oriental, maybe because it is located in a former Turkish culture center. Not as crowded as it is in the Schanze or in the Kiez (St. Pauli). Alternative and simple, thus great!

PS: thanks for the comment (which was unfortunately deleted), just to let you know: Bar Roosen installed security cameras.

Botanical Garden Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

:: SPRING IS COMING SOON! :: BE PREPARED FOR FRESH GREEN PLANTS ::

If you wanna go for a walk and are interested in flowers, plants, trees, dessert, … at least nature! Check out the Botanical Garden in Hamburg. It’s awesome!

Even the last drizzly weekend I was there and was really impressed again. So many different flowers. Have a look in the fragrance-tactile-garden – there I found a flower that smells like chocolate. Hilarious! Small labels and big “try-it-yourself” walls inform you about plants and their smell, touch and use. Discover the Botanical Garden, through all the different theme gardens from “plants of the bible” to “evolution of the rose” through all the continents.

The blue futuristic Loki-Schmidt-Building is a museum for economic plants encouraged by the ZEIT foundation.

One of my favorite places is the dessert garden with glas pyramids (which was a present of United Arab Emirates).

Special programs: Both, the state institute of teacher training and school development and the University of Hamburg (faculty biology), are the ‘Green School’ which hands out indoor plants and test plants for cytology, also carnivorous plants, succulents, etc. for learning.

Historical excursion: Since 1919 the Botanical Garden Hamburg (established in 1821) belongs to the University Hamburg. Due to shortage of space and after a 10 years construction period, it was reconstructed and opened again in 1979 in Hamburg-Osdorf, at the S-Bahn station Klein Flottbek (S1).

Art excursion: In front of the Botanical Garden Hamburg, at the entrance, there is a sculpture, by artist Waldemar Otto which called: Adam plundered his paradise. The original plan was a second sculpture of Eve as well. Public protests because of the exceedingly high costs and the design made the artist reduce it to only Eva’s hand in the golden apple tree. Really funny is the fact: some unknown painted Adam some underwear, several times, again and again. Now it still exists.

Relaxing excursion: The Palme – the palm, is an outside café for some chilled coffee, ice cream and lovely cake. Also you’ll get sausages and potato salad there for absolutely affordable prices.

Music excursion: Every first Thursday in the month there is a concert for free!

Café Mathilde Hamburg (by Linda Nepicks)

A bit of a distance lies between this café and the Schanze and maybe that’s the reason why it’s neither trendy nor „cool” but very relaxed and cosy.

The interior – with old chairs, antiques, wooden shelves and little cupboards – makes yourself feel very comfortable.

The people who come here don’t seek the funky flashy style but a decent coffee or tea, a good piece of cake and a place where you could sit for hours if you feel like reading or writing. As they sell used booked as well and have some readings from time to time, it really is the right spot for those who love books and coffee. Not the worst combination!

You can also just browse through the books which is a good way to get to know writers you havn’t heard of before while enjoying your cheese cake or the great cocoa – they have a big variety to choose from if you like that warm sweet liquid. The area is a quiet one with many old Hamburg houses, lots of families and elderly people who live in that area for quite a while.

So this quiet cafe (apart from rainy Sunday afternoons – maybe the reality for some of the next few months) will give you a complete different impression of Hamburg. And it’s a good spot for writing your postcards if you don’t want or can’t enjoy the books written in German.

And you know what!? There is even a neat little fireplace to warm you up on a cold winters day!

CaféBar Amphore Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

An amazing place for starting the day, best with relaxing breakfast in sunshine and with a great view over the Elbe river!

Inside it is hip and cozy, if you find a place to sit. To brave the cold weather, just go outside (especially in wintertime) – it is unbeatable – here you’ll find warm blankets. It is not very cheap there (fresh orange juice for 2,90 Euro), it no-frills, and not alternative.

It is one of my favourite breakfast points in this town. Great spot for staying after long breakfast/lunch, sipping slowly and thoroughly enjoying your latte and trying the cake in the afternoon. Talking, watching and staying for the first wine and taking the day to the blue hour, the night comes, the harbour lights shines – that’s like a visual soundtrack of the Hamburg harbour!

By the way 1: There is also a big playground for kids in front of the Amphore Café.

By the way 2: Here I always bought my sparkling rhubarb juice to go to Park Fiction (see the Park Ficton article).

Coffee-to-Fly Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

This is one of my favourite places in Hamburg. Till last week I thought you could only reach it by car, but that’s actually not true. Before I start to explain how to get there, I’ll give you an imagination of the place.

Actually it’s just a normal bridge called “photographers bridge” close to the airport Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel. The first time, I was there, it was in the middle of the night and I saw many, many  landing strip lights and some air-crafts landing late at night. During the day with good weather, it’s a great choice for watching air-crafts taking off and landing. There is a small Café where you can get affordable Latte Macchiato for 2,40 Euro or a Beck’s beer for 2,30 Euro. Or some snacks like Sausages, hotdogs, muffins and donuts.

Coffee-to-Fly  is open 365 days a year – spring, summer, autumn and winter – always. Have a small holiday while watching other people going by on the hundred of planes that pass here daily.

Give it a try, you won’t regret! And the best of ALL: it’s for free!! If you’re on a short budget, don’t drink anything in the Café, but bring your thermos flask or cold coke with you.

How to get there: Take bus #24 from Langenhorn Markt [U1] or Niendorf Markt [U2] or the bus #193 from Poppenbüttel [S1] or Langenhorn Markt [U1] to Station “Wrangelkoppel”, follow the sign “Aussichtsplattform” for around 15 minutes, there you are!

Der alte Schwede Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

The early bird catches the worm: For everybody who likes to take a long walk or to jog along the Elbe river in the early morning, here is a really nice spot to take a Nordic breeze.

The big stone, erratic boulder, is the oldest and probably first immigrant of Hamburg. During the Kansan glaciation (around 400.000 years ago) or the Wolstonian Stage (around 135.000 – 200.000 years ago) it came from East-Småland in Sweden to Germany and “slept” on the ground of the Elbe river in the Elbe valley till September 17th, 1999.

That’s when they tried to deepen the Elbe river to increase the turning circle for big container ships. The stone became a dangerous obstacle. Only one day later, it was like a big event for many Hamburgers to watch the scenery at the harbour. Divers prepared the “alter Schwede” with steel-nets to lift it out of the water. A massive crane singled it out of the water, shortly after it came out it suddenly fell back into the river. Only five days later they tried it again, with hundreds of curious onlookers, and it worked!

The 217 tons Småland-granite was baptizided June 6th, 2000 with Elbe water and given its name: Alter Schweder (old Swedish). Between “birth” and “baptism” are 1,7 or 1,8 million years. The measure is 19,7 meter and 4,5 meter high. For geologists it’s very interesting to see the striation of the glaciers.

In the summertime it’s a nice spot for couples to watch a bit seperatly the sunset or making a fire with friends.

Dockland Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

If you’ve got itchy feet, because you haven’t traveled in a while, or if you are homesick, because you are still travelling – this is the best place to go!

Dockland is a fantastic 25m high office building (by Hadi Teherani) formed like a ship, situated in the middle of the harbour with a great view from the top to the docks with all incoming and outgoing ships.

Take the HVV-ferry from Landungsbrücken to Dockland for a romantic harbour sunset. It always gives me the feeling I am at the gate of the world! No entrance fee, only a little work-out with all 140 steps up to the platform.

But after that little exercise I am always feeling like ‘Rocky’ on the top, – no matter if it is foggy or sunny, Monday or Saturday, in the morning or evening (closed in night), it is always awesome! Ohhh, itchy feet!

Gängeviertel Hamburg (by Gängeviertel)

In the middle of Hamburg, in one of the countless office districts made out of glass and steel there is the Gängeviertel. Between Valentinskamp, Caffamacherreihe and Speckstraße are 12 houses with historically worthwhile, extensively original old building substances. The Dutch investor Hanzevast Capital n.v. by Jaap Wolters is planning to tear 80% down. Leftovers should be restructured and extended with new offices.

Many artists squated the district and live and work there. Almost every night there are events like concerts, readings, exhibitions, installation and performances – all for FREE! You can visit the buildings from inside daily from 13:00 (except Mondays). The people there are very friendly and open-minded, can give you loads of information and tea.

Discover the different houses and rooms: Puppenstube (dollhouse), Butze (cubby), Tischlerei (carpentry), Fabrik (factory), Druckerei (printing house), Kutscherhaus (coachmen house), Kupferdiebe and Speckstraße.

The Gängeviertel is not only AGAINST everything, they have a new concept, a new use zoning plan. You can find very in detail on www.gaengeviertel.info (click on Nutzungskonzept).

I stop here to explain more about that beautiful, creative place – KOMM IN DIE GÄNGE – get on with it – get your own picture of it – your own view – ask and talk about what you think.

!!! UPDATE: Suddenly the Dutch Investor paid and the artists had to clear the Druckerei (printing house) and the Fabrik (factory)!!!

Holthusenbad Hamburg (by Linda Nepicks)

What’s better than not letting any programme or „must-do” bother you and escape a rainy and windy day in Hamburg (you might experience quite a few if you are coming between October and April…) in a Sauna!

But be prepared! German Sauna means that you have to – GET UNDRESSED! So if you don’t like this or any cultural or personal reasons won’t allow that I have to warn you that you will miss one of the most beautiful public bath’s and saunas in Hamburg. I might even say in Germany.

The building from 1914 lies just opposite of U-Bahn Station Kellinghusenstraße, that’s why most people rather call it Kellinghusenbad than its „real” name Holthusenbad. Inside you will find saunas with different temperatures, steambath, a little cafe, an outside area (for those who want to refresh themselves in icy water), all modern and trendy changing rooms and a charming and cosy area to relax.

This is a great spa for treat

ments, massage and so on (rather call beforehand to get an appointment)  – and if you don’t want to get undressed and rather use your bathing suite: Enjoy the swimming hall under a huge dome and the small outdoor pool which is heated for winter time. So why bother about any programme or sightseeing. Bring along towels, maybe some flip flops (not used on the street though…) and loads of time.

HVV Fähre Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

HVV – Hamburger Verkehrsverbund -public transport company of Hamburg. Beside metro and subway trains as well as busses here we have the public ferries. Every 15 minutes the ferry number 62 travels from Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder and back (just stay on the ferry). If you have a common HVV-ticket for the day or single ticket for €2.75, don’t miss it.

Fortunately there are no annoying voices from bad speakers trying to explain the harbour with unfunny jokes. Step up on the roof, enjoy the wind and the great view. Start at Landungsbrücken Bridge 3, ferry 62, short stops at Altona/Fischmarkt (see the Fishmarkt article), Dockland/Fischereihafen (see the Dockland article), Neumühlen/Övelgönne (Elbstrand), Bubendey-Ufer and Finkenwerder and back.

If it is too cold, walk down inside the ferry, with great view, too. They even serve hot and cold beverages!

Park Fiction Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

:: SPRING ARRIVES! GET OUT TO THE PARK FICTION! ::

Less tourists, more St. Pauli’er!

Park Fiction is a collective project by active residents from St. Pauli. It’s a green oasis in the middle of Hamburg with a nice view of the harbour with Blohm & Voss‘ dockyard 10 and 11 . This small (only 1500 m2) artificial park is an absolute insider tip.

The lawn was created in waves and equipped with artificial palm-trees. Lots of bike performers and skaters are around. For children, there is a tartan playground with big tulips on the ground and also (very hard to find in Germany) a dog park.

I really love this small recreational park for reading a book and drinking a sparkling rhubarb juice from the Amphore Café (see the Amphore article) beside.

Philosophenturm Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

The Philosophenturm, short Philturm, (philosophers tower) is one of the (not really beautiful but) biggest buildings on the campus of the University Hamburg. In 1960/61, the Philturm was built by Paul Seitz for the studies of arts and humanities.

After a really affordable lunch in the canteen (Philturm-Mensa) in the first floor (check menu and prices here), you could go to the top by elevator or by feet (uff!) and have a nice break and watching the beautiful city from above FOR FREE. Take a coffee with you and relax in between students running e.g. from room 267 to room 865.

Take the elevator to the highest floor (i think it’s 12) and take the steps for the last two ones. It’s a bit irritating that there are no signs for the stairway but at least you could find it out by yourself. You need to go through glass doors and corridors to find the last step. There you can sit on the steps, let your legs dangle. You can see the main train station, the Binnenalster (inner Alster Lake), the innercity and and and (see picture), from the other spot, on other side you can see the campus, the TV tower, the St. Michaelis Church (short Michel), the port of Hamburg, everything!

I love to go there! And it’s free.

PS: Because of the sorrowful high number of suicides they installed new windows (impossible to open without a key).

Planten un Blomen Hamburg (by Ute Kreitz)

With its first tree planted in 1821, this green sanctuary currently comprises 47 hectares of Hamburg’s city center. Magnificent flowerbeds, well-tended lawns, and idyllic creeks provide a place of tranquility. Every section of the park offers different floral themes.

The Japanese gardens and tea house invite you to interrupt your stroll for a moment of relaxation. Families like to visit the enormous playground that may even have some fun in store for the ‘kid in you’, and some locals come here to play mini-golf, or with the over-sized chess game. In the summer months, there are water shows with choreographed music and lights, public theater performances, and concerts at the music pavilion.

Don’t worry, Planten un Blomen also has something to offer in the coming winter months! While flora and fauna outside are preparing for hibernation, you can reclaim a bit of summer when you visit the conservatory of the University of Hamburg. Experience the arid desert climate at the cacti house, admire a great variety of fren, and tour the tropical house for some colorful blossoms of banana and cocoa plants – you may even spot some terrapins.

One you’ve warmed up again, stop by the world’s largest outdoor ice rink (open daily 10:00 – 22:00 through March 21, 2010) and perfect your ice skating skills on 4,300 sq.m. of ice!

Stadttour Hamburg Hamburg (by Ute Kreitz)

For the more athletic adventurer, Hamburg has something fun in store: discover the city on inline skates! Come out on a Sunday afternoon to join a weekly group skate for a 2-hour tour of some beautiful spots in Hamburg. Regardless of whether you’re just visiting or new in town, this group of fun loving locals is always happy to welcome newbies. The only requirement for participation is that you have some experience and know how to brake!

Meeting point for this year-round activity is the ice rink at Planten un Blomen, and from there you’re off to Fleethof, Jungfernstieg, Mönckebergstrasse, Speicherstadt, Hafencity, Landungsbrücken, and Reeperbahn. The tour usually concludes with a nice dinner at a restaurant in Schanze. A decent, comfortable pace and frequent stops will allow you to keep up with the group, and give you the opportunity to get acquainted with your fellow skaters. I bet you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the various spots.

The annual highlight of this recreational skate is the celebration of both the beginning and the end of the skating season (spring and fall). This tradition involves skating around town in costumes, which always attracts quite a lot of attention. So what are you waiting for?!

Strandperle Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

—– Summer season starts at the beginning of April 2010 —–

There are three possibilities to get here: (1) bus nr 36 from city center or St. Pauli to “Liebermannstr.”, then steeply downhill, across very luxurious mansions, back into the Strandperle or (2) take the ferry nr 62 from Landungsbrücken to Övelgönne/Neumühlen or (3) bus nr 112 from main trainstation or St Pauli or Altona to Övelgönne/Neumühlen (final destination).

At the beach you can listen to the rushing Elbe and to the seagulls. The container-dockyards from the opposite are still working day and night. Listen to the deep, hard sound. Ships from all over the world loaded with containers, no one can guess what’s inside, the ships will turn around in front of you. You’ll get an idea how huge it is.

The Strandperle has since many years been the only simple snack stall at the beach. Under the sunshades, the free chairs or at the sandy beach you can sit down and relax.

Sometimes it seems all Hamburgers (from students to seniors) are here standing in line for drinks and (the best!) french fries from the fast and friendly service. The atmosphere is easy-going and relaxed.

I come here often with friends, smoke my shisha or just get some french fries and Astra and “life couldn’t be better”. It’s magical attraction!

PS: Here a short historical excursion: Surprisingly I heard that in former times the Strandperle was a milk stand and people came here for a glas of milk after bathing in the river Elbe. It were closed during the WWII and reopened in 1949 as a restaurant. The owner changed in 1973, so the Strandperle (as we know it) were born. 2006 the owner changed again and the new ones still keep the idea of Strandperle.

The old Elbe tunnel Hamburg (by Ute Kreitz)

Let’s descend to the bottom of the Elbe river! The old Elbe tunnel, opened in 1911, is one of the oldest still operating tunnels in Europe. Open to traffic and pedestrians, it connects the inner city of Hamburg at Landungsbrücken (north entrance) with the shipyards at Steinwerder (south entrance). The south side of the Elbe river offers a spectacular view of Hamburg’s cityscape that is most impressive when it’s lit at night.

If you feel daring, you’ll walk down the staircase, which takes you 24 m below the surface. If you’d rather save your energy, hop onto one of the elevators instead.  The best time to explore during the week is after 20:00, or on weekends when the tunnel is closed to traffic. Take in the full scope of the decorative elements, and admire the glazed ceramic reliefs depicting maritime motifs on the walls of the 426 m long tiled tubes.

Recently, this historic landmark has inspired various annual projects: For the past 8 years, 100 Marathon Club Deutschland e.V. has been organizing the Elbtunnel marathon every last Sunday in January. Since 2007, ElbArt has been inviting local artists to exhibit their work in the tunnel in the summertime. One day, a friend and I encountered two musicians playing with the acoustics of the structure reverberating sounds of their instruments. That was amazing!

As the tunnel is currently undergoing renovation, look for signs pointing you in the right direction of the elevators. When you get to the south side, pass the toll booth, and turn left (make a u-turn at that building) to walk down a little paved path to the Elbe.

Wohlerspark Hamburg (by Linda Nepicks)

Tired of sitting in cafes, in need of fresh air and a stroll among trees? Looking for a place to practice Tai-Chi or maybe you even brought your running shoes and you don’t know where you could go jogging (if you don’t fancy to go downtown to the Alster lake when staying in Schanze or St.  Pauli)?

In this old park with beautiful trees you will be among people who play with their kids, go for a walk with their loved ones or who try to get in shape by one round after the other. And as it’s a small park it really means one round after the other and you will pass the same faces again and again.

What may feel strange for some visitors are the old gravestones (as it used to be a cemetery) which are scattered around the park and spread some kind of gloomy but special atmosphere. In these days you may be lucky to experience an ice-cold day with blue sky while the snow crunches beneath your feet.

Yoko Mono Hamburg (by Linda Nepicks)

If you are looking for a place to play snooker apart from the regular big charmless stuff, cafe/bar Yoko mono could be the right thing for you. Nevertheless there you can also enjoy a coffee or cake after a Saturday morning stroll through the fleamarket, have a gin tonic on a late evening out or just listen if you like the Dj’s stuff.

Yoko Mono attracts a mixed crowd, depending on day and DJ (from 60’s to elektro) and what’s going on next door. It’s close to places for art and artists, like Hinterconti (check the Hinterconti article) and Vorwerkstift.

Though the chairs are not the most comfortable in town, the music varies from great to ohmygod and a very very few bar tenders are not the most friendly, you can still enjoy a very laid back atmosphere. Not stylish, not made-up but easy-going and very typical „Karoviertel” as it used to be.

Zoë 2 Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

Of course it is NO furniture store, but if you come in, you feel a bit like that. Sooooo many sofas all around.

I appreciate this place during the day, when the sun warms up the sofa you’re sitting on while drinking milk coffee. When the sun goes down, the as-hip-as-you-can-be people come from work (the wanna be’s and wanna see’s), the music gets louder and hipper and it’s hard to find a place on a sofa. Some call it an “after hour bar”, I call it and exhausting scenic bar at nighttime.

Better go there during daylight: The people are relaxed and easy-going! The amiable service have time to talk and sometimes to sit for a while with you, and the music fits the situation – call or better write a letter to an old friend, it’s the right time and place for that!

Zoë Bar Hamburg (by Kyra Garske)

“Dear Zoë,

how do you feel today?

I’d like to say to you, how stunning you are. You are perfect to meet friends or strangers or both and it’s like they already know each other. Always you welcomed me with open arms, no matter if I was stressed out or absolutely relaxed, there was a place for me and a smile on your face.

Your drinks are cheap and groovy. Your cosy couches and the yellow-red lamp shades in the back rooms are reminiscent of my grandmother´s warm living room. About the secrets and mystics in your vault, we have to talk next time once more. The rooms are a bit shabby and rustic – but it’s honest! Let’s face it: You are the real Zoë, the authentic Zoë!

All my Love, Kyra.

PS: By the way: good choice to provide rooms with movies like “Gegen die Wand” or “Absolute Giganten“.

PSPS: I was seriously pissed seeing that you raised all prices all of a sudden without even talking to anyone. You’re on the samy level as all the other places now. Please tell me why!”
